800 litre tank in a Ford Custom SWB. Is it possible??
« on: March 27, 2022, 10:42:33 pm »
Missed you guys.  That time of year.  Trying to get a bargin on a van before the end of the tax year.  5 days to go.  Had a vito for years and then Vauxhall Vivaro for the last 5.  Both old vans when purchased.  Finally after 11 years of crafting can afford something a little newer.  Any one have experience of putting a 800-1000  litre incased  tank in a Ford Custon SWB.  Any experience of a custom at all.   Don't recollect seeing 2 many customs used for window cleaning.  I may be wrong.  Thanks Guys and Gals.  Jack

Just bought a new transit custom 320 with 1250kg payload. They just cost more and are less readily available as they often come as dual cab instead of standard panel van. Was a Choice of this or new Renault trafic LL30 model.
I’ll be putting 850 grippatank in it

The Transit Custom is pretty thin on the ground at the moment.  Assuming that because you need 800-1000 litres it will be a 2 man set up? I wouldn’t recommend putting a 1000 litre tank in a Custom, but if you must a 340 would be the absolute minimum, but they are like hen’s teeth and would probably have to be a factory order. You will  just about get away with a 320 if you put an 800 tank in. But be careful what exact model you choose as the payload varies between different specs.

Got a 750l in mine, my custom copes easy with it, worth mentioning you’re only max loaded till the first job, so even if it’s a bit borderline, within a few houses you’re already reducing weight…

Great vans all in all.

We’ve a 310 with 650 litre in it. It’s pushing it , weight wise.

2 man setup?

I’m single operator with 750l and it’s fine…

I see a lot of guys rolling around in slammed berlingos etc, 500l tanks on those little vans with springs rather leaf spring rear suspension, now that’s mad!

One man, but with a few hose reels ladders
 etc, it adds up quick.

We had a t280 previously, took it on a weigh bridge fully loaded. It surprised me. Had to go on a diet!

Some people travel large distances to their first job though.

I tried a transit custom  wasn’t keen on it , then tried a Toyota pro ace  much nicer drive better fuel economy and better ride so bought it also a lot cheaper than the ford 😂😂😂😂.

Thanks guys.  I will look at the model carefully.  Anyone got a VW grafter?  they look like they could do the business.

Spoke to someone with a brand new Grafter couple of weeks ago much better for a tank that size,he said it was very juicy he was doing relatively low mileage every week for £100 worth of diesel.

We’ve got 3 transit customs with 650 grippatank systems in and they drive as if they’re empty in the back.

Had an 850 in the back of the custom and it was fine.

I’d be wanting a 320 or 340 SWB.

just a little reminder chaps - the van may whizz around with all that weight - but it does not make it legal
having weighed all my vans I can tell you they are nearly 150 Kg's over where you think they should be
