Pure freedom do one but will need an extension arm fitted in order to be able to swivel it. I use one at the rear of my van as the extension enables it to swivel in either direction at the tailgate to avoid parked cars as I unreel hose, very useful and time saving.
I went from barn doors to a tailgate van and it is so much easier with tailgate, would never go back to barn doors again.

As an alternative, why not fix it in solid, you can still go out both sides.
