Builder's cleans (on existing customers only)
« on: November 19, 2021, 08:37:37 pm »
If someone called me up, that is not already a customer, i never entertain doing builders cleans, never.

However, we all know that at some point customers may have building work done, extensions etc. and fair enough it happens.
But does anyone else hate it when you pull up on site, and see scaffolding around on one of your jobs u have been doing 4 some time?
I DO, because i know that when its finished im going to have to explain a "BUILDERS CLEAN PRICE" to them!
I.e the time involved and the fact that builders debris will not wash off, and each pain of glass has to be carefully bladed/done properly.  But for some people, they just don't get it, and think your taking the p*ss?

The way i look at it, if you can do 5/6 'regular clean' medium size houses, in the same time it will take you to do that existing customer's builders clean up, then that's the price you charge for them your time, otherwise you'll lose out?
If its a sweet job and the customer is v nice, i try to go as easy as possible on price, but they take as long as they take.
What do you guys do in this situation?
Thanks M

We don’t offer to clean it off I explain that cement , plaster , paint silicone etc should be removed by the builders , it’s very rare that we will do it and on the odd occasion s we have I charge them the full wack and suggest they knock it of the bill from the builders , why should we pick up there mess and loose money

This happened to me this week....a large period property where I have to use my 25ft pole fully extended just to reach the first floor large sash georgian windows....they have had them all replaced (hand built windows)and the guy has left some of them in a mess....

There is absolutely no way I can get up close to scrape them......my ladders are not long enough......

Not my problem.....if it was one ground floor window then I'd do it no problem

He didn't even ask me,I've cleaned them the best I can and he will get the guy back....he ll need a very long ladder or scaffolding to clean them! ;D

Again not my problem..... 8)
price higher/work harder!

I say to painters and builders just to let you know I don’t climb ladders so if you get paint on the glass or  cement it’ll stay there and I know the lady of the house will only call you back,I have done this now 10 years + and once all work has been finished they’ve been left spotlessly clean apart from the odd bit here and there.
If a customer rings me to say we’ve got building work going on I’ll call you when all is done I explain on the phone get them to clean everything off I don’t want to be held responsible for scratching any glass, works everytime worse thing you can do is pull up and the builder sees you and you just say I’ll come back when you’ve finnished they see it as a free pass to make as much mess as they like.

Why do people do one offs when they’ve plenty of regular work 3-4-10 times the price I wouldn’t do em.

Spotlessly clean apart from the odd bit hear and there ?.... I think that’s a contradiction in terms

Remember it's your business....you don't have to do builders cleans whether they are regular customers or not....I'd rather lose the customer than do a builders clean for them...I just can't be arsed with them anymore...

I also don't do gutter clearing, inside window cleaning, inside conny roofs or most other jobs which can be a pain! ;D

Yea, i also dropped doing gutters and insides ect years ago too, but for some reason ive always felt a bit obliged with existing customer builders cleans if they come up, THINKING its just part of our job? I didn't feel that way when dropping insides & gutters (strange?)

If im being honest, i think this due to maybe 'looking a a*sehole' if they have to get another window cleaner on it, making it look like i cant do it? Ive had my fair share of B.C's over the years, but ive always felt your on a hiding to nothing doing them anyway.

But now i know in general, that it appears that other w.c's don't want to do them either, it makes me feel better thinking 'its not just me' and can turn them down easier, if they come up in future.
Cheers m

I've done all sorts of crappy jobs in the past,if a builder or decorator makes a complete mess of the glass then it's their fault, they should mask tape the windows properly.....and come back and rectify it...

I had another customer who had all new windows fitted recently and one had silicone smeared all over it!what a mess!this window was above a conny too....I told her she needed to get them back to clean it off as my pole system wouldn't touch it.....

I clean off general dirt, grime, bird muck and even the odd paint spot if it's on a ground floor window but not silicone or large clumps of cement! ;D
