Dodgy membrane charge warning
« on: July 09, 2021, 01:40:00 pm »
We took on a new franchisee recently and bought a new full set of equipment from Gaps.

The Axeon HF5 membrane is performing badly 248 in, 18 out, 85psi boosted. All our previous membranes (identical setup) have been in low single figures.

We discussed it with Gaps and agreed that it's just outside acceptable (93% rather than 96%). So I suggested we send it back.  Unfortunately their supplier now tests on return and if the membrane on their test rig slips over the 96% limit, we get it back and we're charged £150 for the privilege. We have no way of checking what their setup is, validating their results or even whether the item makes it properly into their test equipment (I'm not suggesting they don't test, just that we have literally no control or oversight of what they do).

Draw your own conclusions but do be aware of this.

I stress that this isn't a criticism of Gaps. This is their supplier.

Also be aware that there are RO membranes on Ebay for£139 (less than the cost of this test) that you can return for any reason within 60 days of purchase. We had one to try and after a few months it's producing at 6ppm (and my water is higher TDS than the franchisee in question).

I know what you're saying vin. My "cheap" membrane from ebay is outperforming the more expensive Axeon I purchased from a supplier. The cheaper membrane produces lower tds water at a faster rate then the axeon.
Axeon seem to be having quality control issues at the moment.

thats a tricky one Vin because your contract is with GAPS - not their supplier.

There is an Ebay seller with cheap membranes of which i brought one and the rejection rate was very poor - but in fairness he took it back with no issues and updated the listing to 95% rejection rate rather than 98%

my last one from VY AIR is a stinking good membrane started at 008 then reduced to 004 (from 380) and six months later settled nicely at 006

Hello mate, thats a very good rejection rate with the vyair. I wonder if they are all that good or you got lucky with a one off? What psi pressure was you putting in to get that? Im  currently using a hydranuatics 4040 (from gaps), and when new it was coming out at 10tds boosted @ 80psi (sweet spot) from 420tds, Ive used axeon in the past with simlar results. Thanks m

I bought 2 axeon HF5 membranes from Gapswater 2 years ago. Each one lasted only about a year before the TDS rose 25 then 30. (Used to be 6ppm).

My previous axeon HF5 lasted 6 years, in the same setup.

I wondered if they were counterfeit or damaged or just faulty. Dunno whose to blame for that, but I won’t be using Gaps again.

I used a vyair one a few years ago and that was pretty good, but out of stock when I went to replace it - since then I have used axeion- sprectrum - and a couple of "unbranded" ones - all of these only lasted 6 months

I boost my pressure to 90 psi

The only thing I changed before using this one to the previous membranes is the water feed pipe to the pump it was standard 15mm pipe it's now 20 mm diameter

What does a larger bore feed pipe achieve?

I bought a new membrane recently from GAPS  and something was clearly wrong as on flush mode water still flowed strongly through the product hose at 150tds. . I was persuaded it was my housing, so I replaced the housing and got exactlt the same result. Clearly the membrane but was informed of the £150 charge. I just binned the membrane and went elsewhere. My membrane was Hydronautics, so it's not the manufacturer's charge of £150.

What does a larger bore feed pipe achieve?

I cant say for certain - its really a process of (my) logic - I use 21 ltm pressure washers and they  require a tank to feed them as mains supply will start them - so my thinking was perhaps the pump is getting starved of water ( if not entirely but partially ) and not creating enough flow  - the bigger bore allows more water through ( again ive experienced this filling the p/w tank a 1/2" bore hose takes nearly twice as long as when we use 20mm bore hose )
so the pump pushes more water into the membrane - I am now producing nearly 200 ltrs an hour to about 110 in the past - however some of this maybe the hot weather as production is always better during the summer months

That's the same supplier I get them from on ebay. Better then other membranes and cheaper.

Works best between 126psi and 168psi. My water pressure is 50 psi.

MIne runs fine at around 85-90psi. It's certainly a damned sight better than the one I mention in the OP.

Works great for me too using a booster pump.
