website/advertising
« on: June 02, 2021, 09:08:18 pm »
Hi Guys, Im looking at updating my website etc.
Has anyone used Yell, ie to advertise locally or build a website via them. They have been pestering me for a bit now, sounds decent what they are offering, comes in at around £100 per month for a local listing, website (built from scratch) and site optimisation etc..
It is a 12 month commitment with them, so just wondered if anyone has used them for some time and found it value for money.
Any feedback good or bad would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys
Steve

Stay well clear of Yell. I made the mistake of using them years ago. They are very good at selling the package to you and then terrible at building, maintaining the website and even worse at communicating with you once they have your money.

This is from first hand experience of dealing with them, albeit it was probably 10 years ago.

Imo you’d get a far better deal working with a local web designer aslong as you check out their portfolio beforehand.

A simple way to see if it's worth using Yell is just search 'window cleaner near me' on google and see if Yell comes up. I would be surprised if it does!!!
For the money Yell are talking you should be able to get a domain, a very good web site, hosting , maintenance and some ongoing SEO.

If you want to see how good a web developer is ask for a list of past work. Look at the past work and see what businesses they are . Then google the type of business and their location. If the past work site comes up well in Google (not paid ads) then that web company know their stuff in that type of business. Ideally you want a company who have done window cleaners before BUT not just reusing a site with a different Word Press theme. You want unique content.

I don't do much web design anymore - I've specialized into online form/quotation systems and databases. I do re-designs for existing clients, but take on very few new web design jobs these days.

There are SOOOO many guys from overseas building websites now - and some of them are actually really good - I just can't compete on price.

Beware of SEO though - 99% of all SEO companies I've seen are scams. Great results short term, but actually quite damaging to your ranking long term. Quality, unique, relevant content added regularly is the best SEO you can get, and is the only real safe way to go. Adding items to an online portfolio - blog posts - that kind of thing. Its incredibly effective if done right, but its a lot of work too.

I wouldn't use Yell to wipe my arse!

I'd go on recommendation. Perhaps you have a friend, or know someone who is a 'trade', who has a good website. That's a good place to start.
