Bet my Vito work van goes faster than Daz's Golf, it's been modified a few times and it's fun when some youngsters try cutting in on me and I make them worker harder to overtake  ;D the young rebellious nature comes out sometimes, more fun than growing up and being an adult.

I overtook a 57 plate mondeo st220 yesterday and he tried to stop me overtaking him  by putting his foot to the floor!the tool!he didnt succeed......i was laughing my head off when i looked in my rear view mirror at some lights further down the road...he wasnt happy! ;D ;D

im not saying my golf is the fastest car on the road but 0-62 in 7 seconds is plenty fast enough for me....400nm of torque and 200 bhp and the automatic gearbox makes it so much fun and its easy to overtake the sunday drivers on the road... :)

That's interesting and would make a great comparison test.

The ST220 has 25 more bhp and weighs nearly 200 kg less.
0-60 is quoted at 6.5 seconds for the Mondeo and 7.1 for the Golf.

Even allowing for the Golf having an additional 75 lb ft of torque I have to ask, was the ST driver asleep?

Not knocking either: both very nice cars.
Daz decided to omit the fact that the ST 220 was towing a caravan at the time😁

6.7 seconds from a naturally aspirated Ford is more 2000's.

The 90's were just getting into the sevens.

The st220 was a dream car as a lad  :D

Best car i ever had was a 1990 series 2 escort rs turbo.

I bought it for 2 grand in about 2001 and spent thousands modifying the engine and cranking the boost up, it was 180bhp and felt like a rocket. Torque steer was ridiculous.

Eventually sold it after the head gasket blew at 130 mph racing an orion ghia on the m62.  Me and my mate were mechanics and had managed to cross thread one of the head bolts which gave way.

I also had an st24, fiesta xr2i.. I was very much a blue oval fan.

Great cars back in the 90s the RS turbo was a m8 of mine had one done a fair bit to it  around the same sort of HP,I can remember him booting it home one night parking up opening the  bonnet and telling me to look at the turbo glowing orange you could almost get a tan from it lol.

Its probably because his st220 was 14 years old and a manual

I doubt his mondeo is lighter than my golf!

I would definitely remap that Golf it would be night and day,Audi over an M for remapping £1000 gets you another 70-80hp to nearly 480bhp from stock in an hour if you try and get that out of an M2 it’s loads of cash and you can put the power down with the Audi. Should have got an RS3 Daz,eat you’re Golf like a peanut.

Don’t think he can, it’s leased and would void any warranty.

Yeah it probably would do but some deals will allow it I’ve heard I drove the M2 in the dry it was lovely I went to another dealer and a Hokenheim silver one was out the back properly written off lol, when you looked from front to back the back wheels were a foot inside the front I said to the bloke what happened there then he said it was probably wet when he did this lol, they are a waste of time in the wet unless it’s 5 or 8 series with 4 wheel drive that’s why I fancy the Audi.

absolutely no need at all...the golf is fine as it is....it still pulls you back in your seat!im really impressed with the acceleration.....the S 3s are just ridiculously expensive brand new and the boots are not as big(for my drums when we start gigging again).....

Currently we’ve got a BMW m140i on a stage 1 map, running 420bhp and 600nm of torque, now that kicks you in the seat like anything!

I’m thinking of selling it soon, looking at getting a kit car from MK sports cars as they only down the road from me. Track days etc will be fun in one.

The beemer is so unbelievably fast it’s almost unusable. In fact I had more fun in my Ibiza gti cupras, mx5’s etc when in early 20’s.

The beemer is just too quick on the road.

The noise though, the straight 6 turbo is a beaut. Fastest car I’ve had and been in, it’s lightning quick, leaves m2’s for dead. Although I’d rather have an m2  ;D

The B58 engine in my M140i is one of the best engines around,it’s in several new M cars as well as the new supra. The stock engine can hold 500bhp tunes with ease. Some kit!

These days anything in the 6-7 second to 60 bracket is slow... but I get it’s still fun Daz.

I still like the M2 and as you say the M140 is a quick car but it’s not an M2 especially on the bendy bits, the first thing I’d do to the M2Comp is change to Miltec or similar that cows udder let’s it down big time from the rear.
If they were 4 wheel drive there would be a waiting list for em.

That’s the engine my wife’s car uses, being the X4 it will be quite heavy but still manages 0-60 in under 5 seconds. I’d imagine the smaller lighter 140i even as standard would be quicker still.

The trouble with the M140s is although a very capable car they are a bit like rain you see it everywhere you go,unless it’s a shadow line with a bit of tasteful carbon on it you don’t give em a second glance lol M2s are crashing in price at the mo you can pick a 20 plate up from Park Lane for under 45 I think I saw.

It's difficult to get an exact kg figure for the ST due to its age. Anything from 1200-1550 is quoted, according to spec but the norm  seems to be broadly the same as the Golf which is, according to various sources, 1465 kg.

Modern cars are very lardy and that's not a bad thing. If I had to crash I'd much rather be in the Golf than the Mondeo.

The Golf looks to be sub 7 second to 60 which is brilliant for its dieselness and mpg.
If it were rear wheel drive it would be in the low sixes.

Mines a shadow edition, looks good. Estriol blue.

Leaves M2’s for dead, but having driven an M2 I’d enjoy it more than the 140, but then the M2 is a full fat M car.

We needed a five door, so the 140 with the amazing zf 8 speed auto box suited our needs...

It promotes itself to casual driving, but when you stick your foot down it’s an absolute animal.

Yeah they aren’t exactly rare, but then again all hot hatches are common these days, even the M2 isn’t exactly a rare site these days...

Yes mate, you’re talking 3.5-4 seconds in the m140i if, and it’s a big if, you can get the traction, which only event happens once a year. There is way too much tourque to launch perfectly. Usually doing the 4.8’s to 60 in mine. Using a timing app.

It’s 40-100 that’s mind blowing. It’s just so rapid it’s almost unbelievable. We have had the stage 1 map though. Stock 140’s run around 350bhp.

Personally I dont think there is anything lardy about my golf 8 GTD....I've had the mk 7.5  GTD and a mk 5 GTI before that..this is the most fun to drive by a country mile and has the same lowered suspension as the golf 8 GTI......Its like driving a fast go kart!😄

It's got plenty of power for me and it's great on fuel and is the cleanest diesel golf ever made with enough room for my drum kit in the back.....the cockpit is so different than the previous generation golfs  though..virtually no buttons...everything's touch screen....I like it......
