Freezing water in hose from filter system to outfill tank
« on: December 02, 2020, 10:29:48 pm »
Evening all,

We have a bit of an unusual setup at our base, we have a large van that can't drive up to wear our filter system is — so we have approx. 50 metres of hose running from our filter system to an outfill tank that stores our pure water. Then we can pump water from the outfill tank to another reservoir permanently  in our van.

As the tempreature gets colder we're concerned that any water left in the hose after refilling between the filter system and the outfill tank will freeze — does anyone have a similar issue and can offer advice on how to solve it? We're thinking of getting a foot pump to manually force any water out but would rather hear any suggestions that are a little less labourious!

When you fill up with the hose going into the tank to fill when you turn off don’t turn off on the  nozzle of the hose turn it off on the mains and then do the valve on the transfer hose.
If you switch off on the transfer hose it will trap water in that hose and if it’s left in sub zero temperatures it will freeze, turning off on the mains first almost empties all of it down to the base of the transfer hose.

When I had hoses outside I  wound it up on freezing nights and kept inside

the other thing to do would be lagging the hose

When I filled up at home I had an IBC in the garden  the pipe from it was buried for most of its length inside a plastic pipe and the end bit was a thick walled hose from a company called Alfa Goma, still froze on very cold days if I didn't empty it though and I'm down South

Hence all people are promoted to the level of their incompetence

Cut the hose in to 10m lengths. Fit each end with Geka fittings. After filling the van undo each connection and allow the water to drain out.

An alternative to Slacky's suggestion would be to cut the hose at the lowest point and fit a Geka connection.  After filling your tank, separate the Geka fittings and drain out the hose.  For this to work of course, you would need to be sure there was no way water could get trapped anywhere in the hose.
