Update....they are changing the burner and asked my permission to change some of the pipe work inside my cabinet...I had a kink in it which he reckons was causing the heater to not be as hot as usual.....he also said the burner was corroded and full of carbon.....

Total cost including burner replacement and labour £430.....I was expecting around the £500 mark.....👍

Glad you are getting it sorted, but it does not seem a good advert for Grippa. I would guess it was not 100% from day 1.

Went to pick the van up,fired up the heater and fault code(9 flashes)came up.....glow pin short circuit or glow pin interrupt....

They ve basically fitted a faulty glow pin!ill have to go back tomorrow now.....luckily I've only got 3 days work to clean this week.....🙄

Glad you are getting it sorted, but it does not seem a good advert for Grippa. I would guess it was not 100% from day 1.

It's been fine for 3 years used day in/day out....its only the last few weeks where the water is not getting as hot as usual.....

The burner that was in my old heater was still in good condition after years of use that’s not normal for 3 years Daz,the unit powers down in a routine that should burn off the heater before turning off.
I always use the expensive diesel in my van always have therefore the heater uses it also,the cleaning agents in the diesel must go a long way to helping keep it running cleaner.

The burner that was in my old heater was still in good condition after years of use that’s not normal for 3 years Daz,the unit powers down in a routine that should burn off the heater before turning off.
I always use the expensive diesel in my van always have therefore the heater uses it also,the cleaning agents in the diesel must go a long way to helping keep it running cleaner.

according to the webasto engineers it IS normal for these burners to coke up after a while esp with the abuse we give them.....thats why oliver recommends changing the burner every 12 months or 2500 hours run time.....

Think he is trying to boost his bank balance and justify servicing there. So boat yard bloke recons 3 years is normal, when used for probably more hrs a day than a windy would.
2,500 hrs run time works out at about 10 hrs a day 250 days a year!

None of my burners have looked like yours does , I have replaced one only and that was 6 years old with over 12,000 hours run time according to the download information, my burner didn’t have any carbon deposits , but was burnt through the casing , I should have got pictures of it but didn’t 😬😬😬. My other two vans have done  aprox 10,000 hours run time last time the info was downloaded which was a while ago now , from talking to boat owners that have theses heaters most last over 10 years as they don’t generally use them anywhere near as much as we do , if they need replacing after 3 years that’s a tell tail sign they have been running on poor quality red diesel , but to be honest the cost isn’t to bad for all the work you have done , hopefully you will get it all sorted tomorrow with all this cold weather you need it to keep your hands warm 😂😂😂

Actually that’s not correct , they should be run flat out to stop them carboning up , generally they only build up carbon when they arnt run hot enough or for  a short period of time rather than continuous running  , mine had virtually no carbon at all not enough to cover. 5 pence piece .

Well this has helped me make a decision.
I have toyed with getting a fitted diesel heated
system. But you can keep it.
I have tried the gas boiler ( always felt risky) and had the immersion heater fitted in my delivery tank ( professionally on a 16amp RCD job) in my last house.

For simplicity, safety, cost and a few other benefits
I will be rigging the immersion heater up again.

So did mine but my water was hot all day and all of the night.

How often does your heater shut down in a day or go into half heat mode?mine obviously goes into half heat mode many times during a day as I dont have a second pump constantly pumping hot water back into the tank so when I'm moving between houses or walking back to the van it will go into half heat mode until I plug it back into my return to tank valve.....sometimes mine will shut down and start up again once or twice  a day if I accept a brew off a customer and dont plug back into the tank.....this could cause my premature coked up burner IMO....

I do the same as you nigel........but your heater WILL go into half heat mode when you turn your tap off for more than a couple of mins then fire up fully again once it gets plugged back into your return valves....

Normally my heater runs all day but occasionally itll shut down once or twice in a day and start up again....

Mine never goes into half heat mode I have 2 heat exchangers and they are either both being used or if only one hose being used the other one is returning water to the tank so it’s flat out all day , we do turn it off at lunch time and back on again after lunch
