Hi All I'm been asked by my client to clean up their fireplace.
What chemicals work best and what method are best for soot removal from brick.

Try to do with  cream of tartar or vinegar.  You can also try baking soda with dish detergent. It's all natural and effective

Cream Of tartar and vinegar are best used on fish, baking soda goes in cakes and dish detergent well is best used on dishes.
I'll leave it to Kev to give you an idea of what chemicals and methods to use.

Unfortunately the last thing we need are people supposedly offering advice that is at best duff.  It is a bit like me going on the Window Cleaners  Section of this forum and suggest using old newspaper soaked in white vinegar to clean windows

Kev don’t forget tinted windows require balsamic and not white vinegar

On the serious side Ultrapac Renovate works a treat on soot. Mind you rinsing those bricks would be a bit of a mission unless you have something like SX7.

We sell a product little known called Aqua Mix Ex-Treme Soot & Fire Damage Cleaner.  It is excellent but Soot Clean up is a real PITA
