Okay okay, that's my point.

No point debating the definition of a quarter.  That's not the issue.  The information provided by HMRC is very clear to me.  Maybe it's worth getting advice if you don't understand it.

As I have said before, claim if you like, it's your responsibility not mine.

Griff the What If.
Ad hom, Malc?
I'm just giving examples of how the grant isn't dependent on income or quarters and how difficult it would be for HMRC if it were.  You're almost there in getting why you could claim the grant but you're going on about revenue. If that's cancelled commercial contracts, fair enough.
And I'm surprised at how many window cleaners said that they weren't claiming it before the grant even opened or before it's even closed.
I'm sure most claimants will get it but don't rely on saying that you didn't earn as much as you did in a seven week period, last year  ;D.
Be prepared and don't worry about it too much, chaps  :).

Do you have some inside info Griff or is all this just your own interpretation?

It’s just, you’re putting your point across so  vehemently whilst dismissing any opposing view so quickly that I can only assume you know something everyone else doesn’t?

I’ve no interest in claiming any second grant, just an observation from just reading the last few pages.
Why don't you have a quick google before making stupid comments?

Hey all. I, like a lot on here was unsure of wether to claim the 2nd. Claimed the first cos we didn’t work for 6 weeks - so that was easy.
As for the second. I looked at my normal income before the pandemic lockdown in the period from Jan to March of this year.
When we compared that to our income from July 14th and the next six weeks to end of August, I personally am over £850 down. We have found that a lot of our customers are furloughed so are on less money, some have lost their jobs , so we are going round on an eight week period rather than our normal 6 weeks.
People have appreciated that and are keeping us rather than stopping us.
I spoke to my accountant and told him about my figs. He said “I don’t say this lightly but you should claim the second Grant as your income is down and you can prove it” he had told other clients they should not claim it for good reason.
He said that remember you will give back 20% plus 9% NI on the grant in any case.
I asked but what if work picks up and I go back to normal 6 weeks, the grant will show that my income is more than last year. He said as long as your figs support that your normal income was lower from 14 July to what you would normally earn then don’t worry.
Hope this helps some to make a decision, as there seems to be a lot of confusion. I’ve had this accountant for 28 years and has always given me the best advice. Over the years I’ve asked about somethings - can I claim for this and that as expenses and he gives it to me straight yes and no - so I trust this guy for advice.
Cheers

No, no inside information, Don.
But I've read through the links and I've kept an eye on accountancy web page. I don't mean to be dismissive- but I probably am, apologies for that- but there's a lot of misinformation on the forum, imo.
I can only give my opinion and I'm only trying to help others. There's a lot of working class guilt on the thread- as with the first- and I don't want anyone to pass up their rightful opportunity to claim or for anyone to pay something back because they see it as too good to be true. You know I'm a loony lefty but I'll step back from the thread unless someone asks me a question directly.

Good idea Griff; you seem emotionally invested in this. Sorry if my 'What If' joke offended.

Fair one mate; you could well be right, it’s just that you seem quite invested in this...

Agree with you 100% about the misinformation mate, unfortunately it can also be easy to get dragged down with the “shouty” bunch that post opinion veiled as fact...I know, I’ve done it  ;D

If you don’t fit into one of these categories then don’t claim

If you work outside on your own and keep away from customers there is very little risk at all...its not as if he s working in a supermarket....

People in very low risk jobs like ours have got to stop  thinking they are entitled to a handout off the government every time theres a spike..... ::)roll

It's wrong IMO.....

Where did he say anything about a government handout?

Truth is we'll all be paying this back for many years to come, whether window cleaners claim it or not.

If I could claim it I wouldn't even give it a second thought.

For anyone feeling remotely uncomfortable claiming the second grant, I suggest you watch an episode of 'The Yorkshire Job Center'. You will probably have the form filled in and submitted before the episode has finished!! Then you will realise that your claim is equivalent to an atom in the Atlantic ocean. After which, when the penny drops that you are actually carrying these people, and have been for years, you will realise that you actually 'deserve' the grant, yep, you've earned it... and more!!
The entitled dregs of society feel absolutely zero shame in taking your taxes, and never will do!👍

It is nothing to do with that though is it.

It simply comes down to whether you fit fit the criteria outlined by HMRC.
