my first render softwash
« on: June 14, 2020, 07:03:11 pm »
so I did my first render clean today, thanks to the advice on here it went well, and the customer was very pleased.

it was the pine end , and just another smaller wall facing the same way, I also did some decorative sills underneath some patio doors.

How did you protect the lead flashing over that side building?

I used sodium hypochlorite , 1, part to 4 parts water, added fairy liquid to make it stick to the render.
I used a back pack, and an old pole and brush.
I started from the bottom and worked my way up just brushing it in.
then went back over the bits that needed a little extra brushing.

I thoroughly soaked it before hand , and kept rinsing it with water in between.
I was worried about the lead as this is new to me , but it turned out to be fine .
I have got a lead restorer just in case but I didn't need it.

What sort of money are people getting for this I’ve just priced a slate roof wash down which was just green in places,I’ve done half of it last week other half to do later this week came off easy but I’d like to get into this soft washing as it looks a lot easier.

Looking good well done just don’t put washing  up liquid in hypo , use an approved surfactant it will work much better and you won’t be putting yourself and others at risk of health issues .

Either of the ones in the picture are good  cleaver wash is dearer , you put 300 ml ( coke can full) in a 20 ltr drum of hypo , so it goes a long way , and  they are approved to be added to hypo legally and won’t cause carcinogens .

Is that 300ml in a 20 litre drum of neat hypo or 20 litres of a mix?

I charged £200 for the wall in the pic, and another small wall about a 1/4 of the size.
it took me around 3 and a half hours , as I was being fussy, and making sure I kept rinsing the lead flashing.
I expect with practice and a bit more confidence I would get that time down to 2 hours or there abouts.

I don't really know whether I charged  the right rate , as I am new to softwashing. but it was a nice change from cleaning windows. I am looking foreward to doing more and learning.
