On a Truck 

Just a word of warning a friend of mine bought one of them that was three years old when he took it in for the mot the following year it failed on rusty chassis it was very badly corroded , the mot station said it was a common problem . Might pay just to get it checked out just in case .

Yes, chassis was the first thing I inspected its a known issue, they snap in half 😂

M.O.T history doesn't mention corrosion which is good

I'm not worried, this one is in decent condition and luckily my dad is a welder/fabricator and we've already discussed taking the rear tub off and plating it all up as a precaution. It will all be treated, going to clean it all up underneath and rust proof it.

The D40 is a very nice truck, especially in four seat King Cab configuration with suicide doors.
They always had more power than the competition, they were the first to have a six speed manual box and to offer a decent level of trim across the range.

However,

Some parts are scarily expensive and in some cases unobtainable, they have a nasty habit of putting no 3 conrod through the side of the block and a complete absence of rust  doesn't mean that the chassis won't crack. The problem is poor design in the distribution of load.
If you look up the Navara Snapped Chassis Group you find that some passed the chassis inspection and then snapped anyway.

I know, I've read it all but at the same time you see them on 06 plates with 180k on the original engine with no snapped chassis. so to me it's like anything else, no vehicle is perfect. Like you say the ranger has its faults and the l200 is known for head gaskets.

I think the chassis tend to crack on the pivot point between the tub and cab so it's an obvious design flaw but they are repairable. I'm going to strengthen that area and look after the truck and hope for the best.. there's not much else I can do.

Ignore the negative comments regarding trucks for work, I’ve got a ranger and absolutely love it, the setup I have means I’m every bit as quick if not quicker than using a van as I have the reel mounted on the tailgate so the angle I can pull the hose is amazing.

I can fit my 22 and 35 SLX poles in the back and I have the extensions for the 35 to take it to 45 foot down the side of the tank.

I know there's a place that does them in Oldham not too far from me, going to give them a ring.

I'm getting a canopy tomorrow that looks similar to yours windows on all sides. So. I'll have a better idea of what will fit in then. Managed to snare it for £150 off ebay in the right colour, I know they are expensive new.

Might copy your reel, I was thinking either like that or putting in on the top of a flatter tank

One of my customers has a very nice D40 with a 3.0 V6 diesel and autobox. No problems with it at all in four years. Though it did replace his previous 12 plate that snapped.

They're getting cheap enough now and it's probably worth taking a risk. I hope all goes well with it.

Yeah nothing wrong with that mate. If you're busier than ever how come you didn't just save the cash for a new vehicle ? Obviously, you've still got to pay the loan back even if it is low interest ? So if you are busier than ever, thats great. But now you have payments to meet, and whilst you're busy thats fine. Do you forsee this being "busy" slowing down at all ?

I could have bought it outright but would prefer to leave the cash in the bank... I can pay the loan off at any time up to a year without penalty and then after that at very low interest. No repayments for a year.

No I don't envisage slowing down at all, I'm not worried about the virus in the slightest

In the unlikely event we all end up struggling and the world combust then its a good job I took the loan through my ltd company with no personal guarantee.

I had a company Ranger I bought new in 2016. In the end I hated it. Poor build quality. Rattly cab. Wouldn't buy another. If I had to buy a vehicle for work and personal use, I'd buy one of these.

I ran a Ford Ranger supercab last 5 years.  Only sold this February  and went back to a small van. Miss it !
Re tank : I had one made for me by Stephen Scargill.
A 500 L baffled lay flat that fitted tightly between wheel arches in load bed.
If its of interest I was going to put it up for sale some time as not needed. I am on south coast though ( 7 miles from Brighton ).

It's approx 1704 mm wide by 800 mm deep and 620 mm high. Like I mentioned was made to measure specifically to be a tight fit between wheel arches Inc bed liner of a 2005 ranger, of course your truck maybe different. Has two hose tail outlets facing out to tail gate. Left with tap for 1/2" hose and right a straight through hose tail for 1" hose  (  quick fill for a back pack or to drain it ).  5" screw on filler cap to the right hand side.
Black with a translucent panel sight guage.
