Sanitising 4040 RO System
« on: May 31, 2020, 11:55:21 am »
So i've got my new 4040 membrane and new resin and now just waiting for new fibredyne filter to arrive.
Usually when i've changed the 4040 membrane i get my arm inside the champ housing and give the inside a good wipe with a cloth to remove slimy residue.
But due to the last two membranes i've had have only both lasted no more than a year im considering sanitising the whole system (champ housing, JG 1/2" pipe work, pre filter housing and possibly 11ltr resin bottle).

So what's the procedure?
Fill those components with a Bleach solution, leave to stew for 24 hours and then flush clean?

No.
Axeon and Spectrum both from Gaps water treatment.
Maybe the quality from manufacturer isn't as good as before?
Not sure to be honest.

The first 4040 membrane I had lasted 5 years.
The last two have been very disappointing, which is why i want to sanitise the system to make sure there isn't something going on there.

Vin from Perfect Windows on the South Coast put up a procedure many years ago on this forum.

I found the thread;

Have you checked that there hasn't been a change in your water pressure ?

I use a booster pump, so the pressure is consistent.

Interesting!

I bought 2 brand new Axeon 4040 HF5 membranes from Gapswater last July, only used one of them (other still sealed up).

Started out fine, 4ppm, now just 11 months later the TDS is now 37 from the membrane.

(Input TDS is 180, pressure is 75psi)

I even bought some TDS calibration solution so I could check it wasn’t my meter.

I change pre filters every month.

I make about 3,500 litres of pure water per week.

I took it all apart and cleaned everything thoroughly, no effect.

I think somethings going on with these membranes.

I have the same membrane, 2.5 year old, tds average around 350ppm in,using booster pump I got 5ppm when new,it's just crept up to around 9ppm.

I find these things totally unpredictable. Some last for a year and longer some for just a few months. We use about 2,500 litres a day. There’s no rhyme or reason to longevity.

At what reading are changing your ro filter? I’ve only had mine 4-5 months and it’s reading 27/28 already and can’t get it any lower. TDS is around the 300 mark and I’m using a booster pump but no water softener and running about 55-45 ratio and it’s a hf5 using roughly 400-500 a day

RO filter?
Do you mean membrane?
My one is currently producing 22/23ppm (was getting 8ppm when new).
I find that once the output is 28ppm+ then it becomes uneconomical with the resin use.
So i will probably change this membrane in the next week or so.

Sorry yeah I meant membrane. How long have you had yours as only got 4 months out of mine but running tight ratio.  What membrane have you got? Thanks

The one im using at the moment is a Spectrum Hf4 which has lasted about 11 months.
The previous one was Axeon Hf4 which lasted 12 months.

http://www.collinswaterproductsltd.co.uk/ourshop/prod_6274199-Hid-LOW-PRESSURE-4040-commercial-reverse-osmosis-membrane.html Has anyone tried these as previously mentioned Collins water

Here's the spec on the link you provided.

HID commercial  LOW PRESSURE 4040 reverse osmosis membrane

HID RT-40/40 LP - cheap Chinese manufacture.
THIS IS A HIGH FLOW MEMBRANE
WITH REDUCTION RATES OF 90% TO 98%  98% is good - 94% is generally the recommended time to replace the membrane as resin costs make it uneconomical to continue - 90% its got even worse.

The optimum working pressure for this membrane is 140psi - that's low pressure compared to a desalination membrane that operates at around 600psi. We can't get a booster pump up there.

We have extensively tested our membranes and achieve the following test results:

Test parameters

Mains water input pressure 75psi - is your water pressure this high? You will need a booster pump.
input water tds reading 274ppm

With the above parameters test results achieved are

production 2.7ltrs per min
output tds reading 8ppm or less - what is it? A membrane gets down to a certain rejection rate  and stays there which should have happened during the test. According to this they achieved 97% rejection rate at half the optimum water pressure. Something just doesn't sound right to me.

Quite a while back one of the suppliers stated that the Chinese manufacturer of HID membranes 'copied and pasted' word for word the specs from an Axeon membrane for their own product specs. The Chinese as good at that.

I have nothing against Collins Water BTW.
They have been in business for a long time. However, it has only been in the recent past that they have added window cleaning to their supply list of uses/users of their products.

I’m going to stick to another axeon hf5 and set it at a better ratio for waste or whatever the sweet spot is when adjusting the waste tap. Thanks for the replies. I’ll get a water softener too

I have had good service from my Axeon HF5.  Its 8 years old in July and still working at 97% .

Will the replacement Axeon membrane be as good? I don't know.
