Only 2.3million self employed claimed the grant out of 3.5million.
1.2million people have not claimed.
Just because you are entitled to it , doesn’t mean you should do it.

I had a relative who never claimed his pension. Had three homes, two in Ireland, he spent enough time out of both countries that the tax man never caught up with him.

Could be many reasons why millions never claimed the grant. I doubt it’s entirely down to morals somehow 😀

There will be reasons why some of them haven’t claimed....not adversely affected, over the 50k profit limit, haven’t been trading long enough, set up as a Ltd company, not declared enough profit, etc etc

I can see it now ....tax man :  were you adversely affected during the 3 months after the first payment?
Window cleaner : yes .... I thought I might lose Mrs smith from number 10 spank street later in the year, and I might have lost business in the future.
Tax man: ...... ...... Your books show you were doing pretty good. so you weren’t affected . Il have that money back thank you very much.
Window cleaner : ..... oh , I spent the money on a massive leaflet drop , hot water system and a new van 😢

If that were true then of course it would go in the expense column of your accounts and thus reduce earnings for the year.  :D

Yeh, but the tax man will see expenses increase over the previous years. If you haven't been working for a length of time and adversely affected by Covid19 the running expenses incurred by you should reduce.   I refueled my van last week. The previous full tank was the beginning of March.

The tax man will also see a claim under the Annual Investment Allowance when the windie writes off his new van as a claim against tax.

I honest believe that NWH is sounding a genuine alarm. Just be careful.  My business was adversely affected when I shut down for 8 weeks. I'm busy as anything now trying to keep up with phone calls to clean dirty windows. Will my turnover suffer in the 2nd quarter of this tax year. Yes, it will a little, but not adversely unless something really unforeseen happens and we have to go back into lockdown.

That word adversely is the problem because everyone will interpret it differently. Its the same a self assessment. We are asked to assess our tax liability on our assessment of our business but the tax man wouldn't usually see our assessment the same way.

Success is 1% inspiration, 98% perspiration and 2% attention to detail!

It might help if you used appropriate grammar when you typed.

I haven't got a clue what you're actually saying.

I think you just get a bit excited, don't you?

Stop trying to over egg it🗣..... “you need to listen to what I’m saying”.........“I’m not going to mention who I talk to” blah blah blah.
You’re hardly telling us ground breaking stuff, all you’re doing is stating the obvious🤣

I never believed that 95% of the self employed qualified for the grant. No chance.

I don't think the grants are decided on a loss in profits. It was altered in May, I believe, because it would've been so difficult to work out.

He probably would have serious supply issues leading to his business being adversely affected

Do you not think that hmrc (who probably have the best legal departments in the world) would have worded things differently to show who this applies to.

They could have said “severely” affected for instance. They didn’t, they said “adversely”.

Any downturn what so ever and you qualify surely. If they wanted to be clear that wasn’t the case then they would have worded it that way.

I think a lot who didn’t take the grant might regret it when all our tax goes up to 40%....... (for example).

Who is going to lose income I’m not talking about work as such,if you have a lot of work and you can sometimes be weeks behind how will you word that,if I was to pull up at a job or get a text cancelling I’d be able to drive up the road and do another similar job for the same amount.
It’s all about what’s going through the bank-accounts during the time you say you were struggling,on paper it won’t look like you have been they are asking you to apply if you’ve lost income not if you think I’ll just bank it in case which some people will do it for.
In most cases it will be a big turnover increase meaning a fair bit more Tax next year if you take the 2 for some it wouldn’t be worth it if they intend in doing the same amount of work throughout the year.

honestly who gives a f**k? ::)roll ;D

claim/dont claim........but if you ve had no drop in income and claim for both grants  dont be surprised if HMRC pull you up on it at a later date.....dont forget you will have to pay tax and NI on both grants in the future as its classed as income.......
price higher/work harder!
