Change of career or stay put??
« on: May 13, 2020, 12:49:57 am »
As the title says I'm thinking of changing career.

I have an interest in mental health and have a potential way in with the NHS because of the volunteer work I do.

Problem is it would be a drop in earnings. I could get by on the lower wage but I'd obviously be worse off and have to sacrifice.

In the long run my salary would naturally increase as I climb the "ladder" but it still couldn't compete with window cleaning especially if I went to 2+ vans.

I'm so bored with window cleaning and the thought of doing it for another 30 years fills me with dread.

That being said most people don't really like their work do they. It's all about the money.

The other option is changing career but keeping the window cleaning business on the side, employing someone. Anyone run theirs as a side business?

All opinions welcome.

Cheers chaps

This is too important a decision to be  influencesed by people you hardly know on a forum - you should be discussing this with important people like your family

For what it's worth - I have always liked the wok I've done, it's usually the people I've worked for that make it a sh!t place to be....

Window licking is not glamorous but as your own boss you make it whatever you want it to be - for me getting in staff and moving into pressure washing allows more challenges

Seriously talk this over with your family

I personally love my job.  I am my own boss and everyday is different. It was my previous job I hated when I was making more money.
To me work is about enjoying things and being happy and content not money.
So if you are unhappy and think a move to Mental Health will suit you why not book a few weeks off and go try it?

Not everyone's cut out for window cleaning so if your hearts not in it I'd consider trying something new.

30 years is a long time doing something your dread.

I enjoy what I do , however if I dreaded it , I would definitely look for something else. There’s nothing worse than going to bed and waking up hating your job.

If you do work that you love you will enjoy it and excel at it. Are you naturally a very patient and kind person? Top qualities for mental health care.

If you are well organised there's no reason why you couldn't run your window cleaning business with an employee I would suggest. Even ticking over with one man in a van it could pay an extra £1000 into the coffers over costs once set up and looked after properly.

No way in a million years would I give up my window cleaning business unless  I was forced to due to ill health/injury etc.....

It's just the best job in the world at the moment........

Fresh air
Good money
Short hours
Flexible
Recession/pandemic proof

But it's up to you.....its your life.......personally I think your crazy to give up the window cleaning lifestyle..... ;D

I suppose the thought of either of you 2 giving something back and not just thinking of yourselves is extremely unlikely.

Anyway Jay, just looking at some of the posts on this forum should reassure you that you know what dealing with folk with mental health issues would be like.  : ;)

How/whey are you a mod? Shouldn’t you ban yourself for making light of mental
Health?

Go on, show some integrity?

running a window cleaning business is different from a window cleaner job which 99 percent have, you cannot run it part time, by having that mindset you will fail.

That's the thing, it really does have its advantages.

One of the reason I got into window cleaning is that I hated poor management. I used to work in sales but I bet any kind of management even in a different sector would be the same.

As you say hours are good, there's no commute, the actual work is pretty easy, money ain't bad.

I suppose the major downside is the winter and rain. Having said that after the first two jobs you warm up n the winter and rain doesn't happen that much anyway.

I think I'll try the change in career as a test while keeping the window cleaning business on the side and then if I don't like it I can go back to the window cleaning. Seems the most logical option.
