Keeping Van Doors Open
« on: May 12, 2020, 10:38:35 am »
Got a Ford Transit Connect from 2009.

The back van doors are buggered.  The hinges are totally broken and at the moment van doors just swing open all over the place.  I have to use cones to stop the doors swinging and its a PITA.

I still have a few weeks off before i go back to work so wondering if there is anyway i can do a bit of a DIY fix to keep the doors open.

I phoned my garage and the hinges to replace them cost about £200 per door!  £400 to get new hinges, no thanks really dont want to have to pay for that if i can help it.

All my local scrapyards are closed so cant even go there to try and source some second hand ones.

So i'm thinking i have 2 weeks off maybe i should just try and DIY something together to keep van doors open and so that they cant swing at all.  I was thinking something that you can use to open van doors and then lock something in place so that both van doors cant move inwards or outwards so they are fixed open in 1 position until i remove whatever i use to keep them locked in place.

My DIY is terrible though.

I need ideas, suggestions, links to products, videos, photos.  Anything you can to help me out pleaseeeeeee.

Thanks guys.

Just a quick idea whikst reading your post.
On my scudo on a windy day, i would use a pole in between the doors to stop them from being blown shut.  Perhaps something like that, just a pole to put in between or hooked at the top of the doors

These hook on the latch then you close the door onto them, holding it in place.

These do look good, have you used them or seen anyone use them on doors that open outwards on van rear doors?

Go to the local ironmongers and buy a pair of hook and eye door stays. Use a metal drill to drill the holes and use very short self tapping screws to fix them. £15 should do it.
It's a game of three halves!

I will do, but im all about saving money where i can as im still stuck at home not working.  If i can fix the van doors for £15 as opposed to £400 using Ford Parts then that to me is a good days graft  ;D ;D

You're welcome. I put a pair on mine about two years ago as after 6 years of door swinging the stops got "tired". Simple fix.
