Transit Custom
« on: May 01, 2020, 12:30:45 pm »
Hi everyone

Hope you're all ok and not bored, or out working!

For those of you who have a Transit Custom, would you recommend them as a good working van?

Also, is the plastic floor in the rear good enough for a water system bolted through the floor, or would it be best to remove that and line-x it?

Thanks
Tom

Going into my sixth year with my custom, love it.
Watch out for the rear door hinges though, can get a battering opening and closing.
I would be careful fitting a split charge relay though, make sure they know what they are doing.
Drives like a car, long service intervals, very reliable.
I'd have another in an instant.
I ratchet my tank in so can't comment about the flooring.
Great van👍

jonboy, thanks very much. Very helpful.

The one I am looking at is a LWB 290, will that be good enough for a 650ltr system, plus the extra weight of ladders etc?

Thanks
Tom

I've got the 290 swb Limited
I have a 650 ltr
Yours will be fine
I'd go for the limited version myself rather than the base version

Looking on the Ford site a swb 290 sport standard roof has a payload of 919kgs. The lwb standard roof has a payload of 861kgs.
They allow the fuel tank to be 90% full but do not make allowances for a driver's weight.

Personally I would look at a model with a higher payload. A 340 will give you a better payload.

In my own experience we had a 650liter tank in a SWB Citroen Relay. With a payload of 1154kgs we were close to the limit with 2 operators. 2 hose reels, ladders, roofracks and towbar, leisure battery and a full tank of diesel.

You would be better looking at the 310 upwards if you have a 650 litre tank and other equipment.
The plastic loadliner will be fine for bolting your tank on top of but get rubber matting or similar to cover the rest as it’s very slippy and all your tools will get thrown about.

I have a 300 limited.
Great van and I really like it very nice to drive.

I have a 650 fitted by Grippa  but I don't carry much at all.No roof rack or ladders. 1 fixed reel and poles, bucket, and cones is about it.
I had it fitted through load liner and it is fine.

I’ve got a limited custom too, had it nearly 2 years no issues yet.
650 tank plonked in the back and I love the floor liner stopping any water running underneath And I fitted the extra rear arch covers too to stop them getting bashed.
As above make sure the rear door catch bolts are tight as they come loose, the front doors are a weak point being like big sails when it’s windy and Definately change the door lock as they’re so easy to get into the van for thieves.
Great driving van though and the heated seats heated screen and folding mirrors are nice little comforts while out grafting

I had one on lease so brand new and had an absolute nightmare with it. 1 month in the fuel injectors went, then electrical faults on and off for the next 3 months before I demanded a replacement van as it was costing me a fortune in time off work. It went back to ford with the electrical fault and they blamed the roof racks that I fitted   ???. I now have a transporter and haven’t had a single problem yet in the last 4 months or so

We've got 4 in the business and i've bought my second one after having the first one for 6 years nearly.

Love the van and only had PAS pipe leak and bottom pulley go (both common).

My advice is keep the load liner but paint the floor underneath. I have done this on my second van and feel happier about it!

I would be looking at a 300 personally but i have a 650 System and went with a 320 SWB.

Something has to give comparing SWB and LWB with the same model. The LWB has more metal in it than the SWB. That extra metal comes off the payload.

It was the same back in the old Transit days. A T280 was a GVW of 2800kgs. The SWB had a higher payload when compared to the same van with a higher roof. The extra material in the roof reduced the payload.

Had one for about a year, bought a 65 plate very pleased with it so far
My friendly mechanic reccommended one to me when he got sick of the sight of my Citroen Dispatch  ;D
