Worst week yet
« on: April 30, 2020, 06:17:16 pm »
This week has been my worst to date for customers cancelling due to Covid-19, I have lost 5 since Monday! At the moment I have lost £290 of work per month due to the virus. If the current pattern of losing  work continues, by the time things get back to some kind of normal I expect it to be substantially more. Of course in that time I have also picked up some work but that is usually what I experience  at this time of year.
Although I have continued to work throughout the pandemic,  I will be accepting the self employed grant I am entitled to as my business has clearly been affected.

I’ve had about 6 cancellations now but not worried
I’ve had my office cleaning contract stopped that’s over £1000 a month.
But I no they will all come back.
We just have to dig in .

Cancelled due to Covid-19. So I would hope to get most if not all back at some point.

I've had about a dozen asking to leave it for now. Only 3 solid cancels though.

Do I care? Nope not really, most of them were dross and I've picked up at least that amount the last month so all covered.

Personally I wouldn't want to rely on a contract for such a large sum of money every month myself.....

Lots of eggs in much smaller baskets is the way for me which means lots of domestics and a few smaller independent commercial jobs  so if i lose a few it doesn't hurt financially too much.....

It just grew into that amount.
But it’s only suspended until further notice.
We have been cleaning the offices for 6 years  and it a well established business.

It doesn’t matter how well established it is I’ve spoken to a few customers I know have been trading for years,a couple of them said we might just wrap it up and not bother it’ll take a few years to get back to the stage we were at in February.

I’ve had a few put it on hold for the moment. Main reasons being they’ve lost jobs or have vulnerable persons in the home and they want to socially distance as much as possible. However, I’ve picked up new work as well due to people being at home and seeing me working.
One unexpected positive has been the number of customers wanting to pay by bank transfer that previously wouldn’t consider it.  I had six in one day want to move to this method this week.

In an ideal world nobody wants to rely on one contract for 20-40% of their income but without the luxury of 25+ years trading that’s exactly what can happen.

I have one contract that pays £1200 per month and obviously I’m quite reliant on it purely because of the total value. I didn’t take it on as a job at this value, it grew from £200 to £400 to £600 and before you know it you are invoicing £1200 every month.

I’m sure we’d all love a £5k per month income that’s split over 300 customers but that’s not the reality for some of us that have been in business for 10’years or less.

Deegee out of interest, what made this particular job so scalable? I have a small business park I clean, which went went from £80 a month to £500 a month as more offices were built. I love it!

It’s just that the contract grew and continues to grow.  It’s actually 18 different sites but it’s all done on the first 4 Monday’s of every month. Great hourly rate and good payers. Will be starting back again in the next couple of weeks.
