All you lot use Gocardless etc would that not be proof enough, all of sudden in March you payments into your account would have slowed down or stopped if you’re not working.

There also saying you dont have to pay it back
When the first statement  came out they said it would have to be paid back with the tax on top

It’s always been described as a grant and not a loan, and therefore would not need to be repaid.

Can you link us to where it was ever said it needed to be repaid?

I dont have a link it was said in the first speech when it was announced  this is a grant and will have to be paid back with tax on top but I think they have re worded it all
Sunak did briefly mention that we could have to pay more in tax and NI to cover some of the grant. That would be over years and not all at once. When the government spends money on us, they ask for it back in another way.

It would but I don't think they'll be pushing for proof.
Let's not forget the government shut the country down. It's not us window cleaners claiming that we were rained off for three months. They know that many have been adversely affected because they closed down the economy.

It surprises me how much faith you have in this Tory government Griff, being a scouser.

For the lads like yourself who have sat it out due to family members being high risk or other reasons, I really hope your faith is repaid.

I’ve not heard anything yet.  My work is all town centre shops in Ipswich and Woodbridge so 100% commercial.  Since the announcement I’ve gone from cleaning 90-95 shops a week to 5 shops a week.  (2 Pizza Huts, Specsavers, a Mortgage company and a recruitment office).  Takes me about a hour a week😂

I would love to work but have no work to do!

It says confirm, not prove.

Probably a tick box exercise.

You think they’re going to sit down and manually assess every single claim? 2,000,000 claims when which ever way you turn the offices of the treasury are currently swamped.

Itll be means tested......if your records show a big drop in income between March-June then you'll get some money...if not then you wont(which is fair).

Yes I think they will as there will be a massive potential for fraud if they dont.....

''You can claim if you ...............have lost trading profits due to coronavirus
You will need to confirm to HMRC that your business has been adversely affected by coronavirus.''

I'm assuming there will be a tick box,  for legal reasons maybe, that asks ''has your business been adversely affected by coronavirus?''
Yes or No. I would then tick Yes.

I can't see anywhere any asking to Prove as opposed to Confirm.

But even if they did,
I normally earn £2500 per month
During the coronavirus lockdown I only managed to earn £2490 per month
I have an email/text/letter off one customer saying ''please don't clean my windows because of coronavirus''
I then  have 'proof' that I have 'lost trading profits due to coronavirus'.

Please can I have the £7500 taxable grant as promised.

PS Unlike Dazmond I will not be giving £7500 to charity but full respect to you if you do.

I personally think your more likely to get 80% of the £10 losses due to Coronavirus, so £8.

But I won’t even get that, so it’s off to work I go.  ;D

So what happens if the lockdown doesn't last three months ? plus it says up to £2500 per month which could mean you would  only be entitled to £10 for each month of lockdown, I say could as I don't know if this is the case, one thing I do know is as a tax payer I would be more angry with the government if they gave out handouts to those who didn't need or deserve them than I would if they backtracked and decided to means test them.

I'm only going by what it says on the Gov uk website. It could change of course and they could certainly backtrack.

''The grant will be 80% of your average trading profit, divided by 12 which will give a monthly amount. We will pay this or up to a maximum of £2,500 a month, whichever is lower.''

If my average annual trading profit over the last three years  is £37,500 per annum  x 80% is £30,000 , divided by 12 which will give a monthly amount of £2500. They will pay this.

I'm not a Scouser, deeege, and I'm not a Tory. I don't know whether I'll sit out the full three months either but I'll certainly be adversely affected because the schools will be closed, if nothing else.
I don't see this grant as blind faith; there is no free money. The government want as many of us as possible to have businesses and jobs to go back to after the lockdown. Think of the impact on the economy if we all had to shut down and all those furloughed workers were unemployed. I think their view is that a maximum of £7, 500 is a price worth paying.
And let's not forget, we'll pay it back over the years. I see it as a 'loan' to keep us afloat.

That's understandable. So just supposing for a moment that they do give out the grant to you as it seems they will, assuming you've fulfilled the eligibility,   would you still be angry enough to give it back, or away as Dazmond has said?

I won't be that angry  :)

How?
They'll have an idea about the numbers of self employed and there's a cap on the grant.

Don't be angry.
They are not going to means test everybody. They haven't got the time or the money, that's why they are using a risk based approach to compliance.

Daz says it will be means tested over March - June. If you have a drop in income then you will get the money.

We stopped working on the 23rd of March. The tax year ended on the 5th of April. The tax year for 2019 -2020 isn't going to reflect much of an income loss as it spread over 12 months.

The only time the receiver is going to notice a drop off in our earnings is after we have submitted our tax return for 2020-2021 which could be toward the end of 2021 and the latest by 31st January 2022 when that tax return has to be filed.
