It won't be means tested.
They are not going to means test everyone. They don't investigate every tax return.
If you've been adversely affected and are "responsible" (I think that was the word used) you'll be ok.

Claim a grant if you’ve lost income
If you’re getting less work or no work because of coronavirus (COVID-19), you might be able to claim a grant through the coronavirus Self-employment Income Support Scheme.

The online service you’ll use to claim is not available yet. HMRC will aim to contact you by mid May 2020, and will make payments by early June 2020.

If you receive the grant you can continue to work or take on other employment including voluntary work.

Nope, if the government is going to hand out free money then it would be foolish not to take it especially as it will have to be paid back by us all in taxes no matter if we take the hand out or not, well when I say all as per usual it will be the young who will end up paying for most of it, that said I would rather the government didn't reward me or people like me for having no morals.

Due to losing my commercial work, inside work and the usual FSG work in spring I have lost an estimated 45% of my income. I used to give a receipt (6 x 4 inch hand written business card) for payment for all the commercial work. Whether I can get proof to HMRC is another matter.
Some lost work would be difficult to prove, e.g  a regular window cleaning customer whose holiday home I clean asked me to clean his conservatory roof and double garages but his water is turned off from inside (I am traditional) and they are on lockdown so cannot turn it on.

I am working 1 day a week and living off that and my savings that I have saved since starting the business in January 2018. If I were to get the taxable grant I would receive about £60 a week which would really help.
If HMRC invited to me apply for the grant I would but am concerned that the wording will be changed again and I would struggle to obtain proof of loss of earnings due to Covid19.

I’m working as normally as I can, albeit with a greatly reduced round and income, due to so much of my commercial being on hold.

The grant will be very much welcome for myself and my small family, particularly as I’m the ‘bread winner’ and my wage has been knocked through no fault of my own, like others.

If I was purely residential like Daz, I’d not be bothered at all.

It’s a very individual issue. For the likes of deegee and myself, we’ve felt the effects, whereas the likes of Daz, he’s hardly felt a pinch at all

I don't think that you will have to prove it, CC; especially given your circumstances.
The grant is a lump sum.

No I think it immoral to take a handout when not needed, working or not, but I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say I wouldn't do it.

Yep and those who should have been out working and didn't go should be treated the same, now before you start I don't include those who stayed at home because they or a person they live with are in the high risk category.

why would you?sole trader window cleaners are allowed to work and are encouraged to go to work to help keep the economy going......lets be honest we dont need the financial help.....its the hairdressers,barbershops,interior designers(my missus),people who run pubs,clubs and restaurants,electricians,etc,etc, that deserve the money....not us......they cant make any money at the moment....

If they earn 80K a year the Govt has said they're not entitled to a handout.

I dont have a link it was said in the first speech when it was announced  this is a grant and will have to be paid back with tax on top but I think they have re worded it all

Sunak did briefly mention that we could have to pay more in tax and NI to cover some of the grant. That would be over years and not all at once. When the government spends money on us, they ask for it back in another way.

N.I. class 4 contributions will probably be going up from 9% to 12%

Nothing from the gov is free - either way we will be paying it back over the next few years via tax etc…  whether you take it now or not so I would say take everything that’s on offer it’s going to be a tough ride for the rest of this year
