I clean a house for a couple who I have always thought were about late 60's early 70's and found out today that the wife is a very sprightly 75 who is miffed at "having to stay in". She used to organise litter picking days and serve in the village community shop as a volunteer before CV and got round not being allowed to by going in when it closes to clean it thoroughly for the day when no one is about; then she loads up her cycle carrier with bread and pastries that can't be used in the shop and drops them off to the elderly and infirm round the village on the way home.

So they are both at the door - at 2 metres distance - chatting about their kids and CV etc. and the husband says "our daughter and son in law are hospital workers in (Bristol hospital) and they have both had CV, got over it and are back at work."

He is a very accomplished but self-effacing man who has every reason to be proud of his kids but I could sense that these were not "hospital workers" as in porters or cleaners and I said ...

"I'm sensing that you are using "hospital workers" in a rather understated way, Peter".

He blushed and said "Well, ummm, errr, they are part of a bigger team - all in it together." His wife laughed and said "Stop being modest about them - one is a Consultant Haematologist and the other is an Anaethsetist!"

I just thought what a great family they were - kids (probably in their 30's or 40's) who had had CV (mildly) - and were back on the front line and he just calls them "hospital workers".

It's a game of three halves!

good story...
during this pandemic, the cleaners are more important than the pen pushers .
