Finally some help for the self employed
« on: March 24, 2020, 07:00:08 am »
So reading through the Coronavirus bill which I believe has now passed parliament, deep within it is the following:-

Statutory self-employment pay
(1)
The Secretary of State must, by regulations, introduce a scheme of Statutory Self-
Employment Pay.

(2)
The scheme must make provision for payments to be made out of public funds to
individuals who are
(a)
self-employed, or
(b)
freelancers.

(3)
The payments to be made in subsection (2) are to be set so that the net monthly
earnings of an individual specified in subsection (2) do not fall below—
(i)
80 per cent of their monthly net earnings, averaged over the last three
years, or
(ii)
£2,917
whichever is lower.
(4)
No payment to be made under subsection (2) shall exceed £2,917 per month.
(5)
A statutory instrument containing regulations under this section is subject to
annulment in pursuance of a resolution of either House of Parliament.

So 80% of nett monthly earnings, averaged over the last 3 years!!

Would anybody NOT be happy with that? That’s huge for most of us lot, it brings us in line with the employed doesn’t it.

My only concern is when would this be payable from? Right now he has said we are allowed to travel to and from work. I’d guess that this would only be paid from the point that a) we go into the 7 or 14 day self isolation or b) we are specifically told we are NOT to go into work. Neither of this has happened yet imo.

The big question will be are we officially being told we can't go to work, at the moment technically we are not,  so are we elligable yet ? He needs to be totally clear today on what was said yesterday and what he actually means. I'm sure he's been made aware of all the confusion he has caused at the moment.

At present if you're employed you can't just down tools off your own back and claim the 80% the gov is offering (it's paid via your employer too and the employer claims the money back from gov).

If your employer requires you to be in work, you go to work as normal.

I think the same principle applies here for the self employed.  If you can work you work, if you can't - because you've lost all your work (think self employed pub musicians, or the self employed house cleaner who lives down the street from me), then you can claim based on your previous tax returns.

Which will annoy a lot of people too. ;D

I can't see government being able to pay 80% of the wages of the whole nation (up to the ascribed limits) for anything other than a few weeks.

Months on end?

Nope.  We'd be bankrupt as a nation.

Well the Construction Industry is being vilified at the moment by the media.
Which is very unfair in my opinion.
Considering a large percentage of construction workers are self employed i hope this will force the hand of the Government to consider proper financial assistance for self employed workers.

You could be right, I'm beginning to think the way he worded it yesterday was for this reason, make it sound like you can't go to work, but technically you can so therefore not elligable to claim on the self employment help that may possibly be announced today.
It will certainly backfire if that is the case.

I'd rather have him in then that dithering fool Corbyn. He's probably still trying to decide if he should have white or brown bread for his breakfast this morning.

The horror that Corbyn would've imposed on us, after the months of Labour debating what gender covid-19 is, doesn't bear thinking about.

I voted Boris in and I think he is doing ok so far considering the two major things happening,  brexit and Coronavirus when he came into the seat of prime minister

No, but I remember being happy that he got in and Corbyn didn’t.

Or is that what you mean.

It's a shambles. You know it. I know it.

At least no one would be thinking that JC was being deliberately vague to dupe people in a time of crisis.

Although I do think it's better the Tories are running this.

Us, for years to come. There will be a recession when things get back to some kind of normal. After the recession tax and N.I will be hiked up in order to put money back into the coffers.
