Speechless
« on: December 24, 2019, 07:52:16 am »
Got chatting to a fellow window cleaner yesterday and I asked him about his water purification method. “Oh I just throw some  tablets into the tank and it makes it pure” came the reply.
“What does your TDS meter show? “ said I incredulously.
“I’ve heard of those things  but I don’t get many complaints so I don’t bother”

I was pretty much speechless at this point.

I don’t intend to try this method of purification anytime soon even though it would be a lot cheaper than the bags of resin I use.
But  I have 2 questions;
Has anyone tried the tablet method and what are the results like?  And if the results are less than impressive, as I suspect,  then are  (most) customers a lot less fussy than we imagine them to be?

Im assuming he's using some tablets associated with purifying water to make it safe to drink?
So he doesn't sound like the sharpest tool in the box.

His "efforts" will only serve to give wfp a bad name and his customers will probably not be too keen to use another wfp window cleaner once they have kicked him to the kerb.

In some parts of the UK tap water TDS is very low. Where my sister lives it's under 36ppm. Could this why he gets away with it?

What was the set up like in his vehicle. In fact what was his vehicle?

A 1997 Ford Mondeo, with barrels and a home-made trolley?

Was he unkempt and unshaven with greasy hair. No uniform, roll yer own cigarette butt behind his ear, trainers, scruffy oil stained  jeans?

Was his pole purchased off e-bay under the ‘interior decoration’ section and was it made of aluminium? Did his brush look like hedgehog road-kill?

It looked like a proper set up with sign written van etc. I think he’d bought the round and hadn’t been doing it that long so maybe customers were still in the “give him the benefit of the doubt”stage. If I get chatting again I’ll try and steer him in the right direction

Gary999 who used to be on here cleaned with 40ppm and didn't have any problems.
That said some of those water purifying tablets contain salt so that would definitely show up on the glass.

What I’ve learnt is that if you are a ginger you’ll get away with a high TDS reading lol lol.

Have to say, it does make you wonder.

Hot water for better results, dirty water to eliminate one of  the benefits hot water has given you.

The guys cleaning solar panels with tractors do this. Just pour some solution into an Ibc and hey presto. Not tried it myself.

Sometimes the answer is to go back to the house he has done when the windows have dried to see what the result is. We've checked on a couple of street houses over the years and will tell you that the cleaner (who is now retired) just used ordinary tap water.

I don't how some get away with it, I've had complaints/spotting form as little as 3 tds.

Only the other week I was using a batch of 5ppm and had 2 complaints about spotting. I didnt realise until I got a new tds meter as my old one was reading 1ppm. Mind you it was an ebay special.

I met another windy about 2 months ago and got talking.....he said he changes his resin about every 6 months....he'd not got a metre his TDS test was to clean his own windows every weekend and if they were alright all was good.
Considering my TDS is around 80 and I change one of the vessels at around 005 which is about once a month he must be way up the scale.....he's from Wakefield so not sure what the TDS is.....I once filled up in Ossett at a friends and that was over 200 which burned my resin out which was ready for changing anyway....cleaned the rest of the day with it at 024.
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.

Mine was about 250 in wakefield for last couple of years, but last time I checked a month or so ago it had come down to about 100.

It was around the 100 mark when I started out but then went up.

Don't know why this is, must be change of water source.
