Advice on vans
« on: December 08, 2019, 07:08:22 pm »
Tell me which van you would buy.
I'm looking at a brand new Citroen Berlingo 1000 and would be fitting a 500 litre tank in.
The other van is a Citroen dispatch. It's 2015 but with 8,000 miles and is mint. I've been toeing and frowing from one to the other. Which would you buy?
Thanks
Steve

I have the new (69 plate) LWB Berlingo with a 450 tank. It’s so much better than my old (66 plate) Berlingo, literally carries the load effortlessly. I can’t recommend the Berlingo enough.

I did test drive the despatch also but i thought it was a bit big for my needs.

If the dispatch is a 1.6 (as opposed to 2.0hdi) I would stay away from it.

An alternative to Berlingo is Fiat Doblo (lwb) which also has a 1000kg payload.

When I change my van it is likely to be berlingo or doblo. I think the doblo should be more reliable as it seems less complicated.

Yes the dispatch is a 1.6. Are they bad then?

I’ve had new Berlingos 1.6 in a 64, 66 and 69 plate. The engines are superb.

Are they 6 speed?  I was told the 5 speed 1500 was more economical

Mine have all been 5 speed. Its the 1.5bluehdi model. Absolutely zero underpower issues, pulls with a 450 tank in no problem at all.

IMO they are under powered and can have issues with the turbo. Unless you need a van that big I would go for Berlingo or similar sized van.

No you won’t be putting 500 litres in that unless you are stupid.

my stipulations when choosing a van....

1.at least a 900kg payload(mines 936kg)
2.long enough to fit 25/47ft poles in without cutting into the bulkhead
3.rear parking sensors, heated drivers seat, heated windscreen and air con.
4.low(ish)roof for getting ladders off.

thats it.....
price higher/work harder!

If you don't need to carry a lot of weight or extra gear and you work solo you may as well get the newer van for the same money.

If you need more payload, think you might employ or carry extra stuff then get the slightly older bigger van.

Not sure on the new engines but I have a 2014 2.0 hdi dispatch and had the 1.6 hdi before it.

The 2.0 is much much better. The 1 6 is underpowered and drops to bits. I had loads of problems with the 1.6 from the turbo to the gearbox. They are the same engines found in some Peugeot hatchbacks and not up to the task of hauling a tonne plus about. The 2.0 also has a six speed box.
