I don’t have staff but for me using an electric reel is a must abit like using an xtreme, I wouldn’t or couldn’t go back making things harder!
Anything that makes our job easier I’m always up for and for me i make more money because I’m less tired through the day so able to add more work in and get it done quicker.
If I had staff I’d give them an electric reel but warn them if they pull the chain off then they’ll be using the manual handle that can be attached until I have time to fix it😁

I have a van mounted manual Hannay reel (similar to Cox reel) that is now 14 years old and it is very easy to use.

I wonder if a lot of problems people have with manual reels is due to the quality of the hose reels they use. They Hannay is about £400 to buy incl VAT, but well worth it IMO and last years.

Nothing against electric reels, but if you use a top quality manual you are less likely to feel the need to get one.

i recently took my hannay out of the van because none of us liked it. its sat on the floor of the unit now unused.

it was too good. it would continue to turn after you'd stopped pulling so the hose always ended up loose on the reel and then get looped over itself.

we never got to grips with it. we used it for about 5 years, and it worked amazingly well in terms of it being smooth and gliding out. it was just too frictionless

The Hannay has a brake which applies friction when reeling out (I disengage brake to reel in), this prevents over running. The brake is very simple to adjust.

The last few metres of hose I pull out I also pull more slowly which prevenst over running of reel. (I prefer my brake to be lightly adjusted).
