I've always thought this a bit of a no no

But...

I'm considering putting one in my van

Using about 800l +  of water a day 2 man

Just thinking, it's in a cage and if I baffled it and bolted it to the floor are they safe ?

I'm just trying to be cheap, buying a 800l wydale plus a cage would be £600+ Vs about £50 lol

I have a 650 but its tatty, had holes in it near the top and leaks when full. I could patch it up. Been carrying barrels also but I don't care much for it.

Anyone?

I know several people that do what you are proposing , the framework of the tank isn’t designed to be used and exposed to the forces that an accident would put on it but yes it would be ok unless involved in an accident , it’s only a decision you can make , but personally my life would be worth more than a few hundred quid .

i know a few windows cleaners and car valeters who use IBC tanks in their vans...personally i dont think they look too safe......but who knows?if you had a crash i think they would explode which might be better than it staying intact and crushing you through the bulkhead (as they are a lot thinner than wyedale tanks).....

do what you want.....its your life and van.......they might be safer than a solid tank.....

They stack them  2 or 3 high in the back of a lorry full and secure them down with cargo straps.  Transport companies have done this for years.

Our local window cleaning cowboys use them in their 'fleet' ( down to 6 now I believe) of vans.  When they leave the doors open and I look inside I shudder. I wouldn't say an IBC tank with baffles is unsafe, but when they use cheap straps hooked to the loading bay securing eyes is when I get a bad feeling. One used what looked like washing line.

I disagree - this is a long argument but the wydale tanks are not designed for transportation and the baffle is rubbish

I use IBC tanks - fully baffled then bolted through the floor and just for extra safety I have steel tubing running across the van  c pillar?) where the tank is - no way can it move forward as its now part of the van - this is also th case if you have the tank up against the bulkhead - there is no chance of getting momentum to force its way forward  - now if some idiot hits you up the arse it may fly out the back doors

How exactly do you bolt them down...

Is the pallet they come on plastic? I've never inspected one... Did you bolt through that?

I get the metal frame and metal base ones - then I use  u bolts  through the floor

 just to add my old maxus had a pure freedom 1000 ltr system which was 2x500 wydale tanks - the frame was made of 3mm thick stainless and used 12mm bolts - a real belt and braces think that would never move but the rocking and slosh from the actual tanks was terrible it could force the van forward easily a foot or two when pulling up at traffic lights

Just spend the money on something crash tested, if you buy second hand it’ll hold its value if you want to change it in the future, it’s not like they wear out!
 Pay a couple of hundred quid and have it fitted and certificated, so you can insure everything properly. Especially if you are employing and you had an accident that caused them  serious injuries, they would sue you for everything you’ve got.

I know strapped 1000l ibc tanks  , they are based near me i see them all the time. The vans dont look like they can deal with the payload either which is worrying.

i was more thinking about bolting and baffling them securely rather than just slinging one in with a strap.

I dont think there much in it tbh, any tank bolted in properly must surely be better than any tank with just a strap.

Wydale tanks are not properly baffled. I am surprised an "engineering" company such as Pure Feedom, fit them.
