Best way to produce pure water with meter
« on: September 22, 2019, 08:09:10 am »
Morning all.
Just wondering what you guys with water meters use to purify your water...
My RO is using too much water, one  big water bill later,  😳 I tried using just DI vessel (obviously no waste water) and we have really hard water so going through resin pretty quickly.
Wondered if there’s any reasonable RO systems that use minimal waste? Any help would be appreciated 👍🏻 Thanks

I'm on a water meter, and I have fitted a sub meter before my garage tap, where I fill my tank
When my water bill arrives I take southern waters meter readings then my sub meter reading,
I then phone them and give my meter readings, they then calculate the difference,.
Sub meter saves me approx £400 a year
Forgot to say my waste water goes into my pond not down the drain, having said that they have never visited to check

We did the same in our unit - as the only other water use is the toilet we don’t pay any money for the sewage charge side of things so that’s around £900 per year saved

Find a customer close by that's not on a meter and give them free window cleaning all year round.

Harvest rain water...

We are in a soft water area so just go straight through a DI.

So you are in a hard water area.
And im assuming you are on a water meter?
Just using resin is uneconomical as you have found out.
So that just leaves RO as the method of choice.
I would suggest an RO with an adjustable waste valve which can be set to 60/40 or even 50/50 ratio.
My recommendation would be to go for a decent 4040 system if your budget allows, and depending on tap pressure you might require a booster pump also.

Sorry I wouldn't agree with any of that.
If the OP is running a business and needs reliability and sustainability none of those options offer that.

I know many a window cleaning company's that use customers water supply.
It a was a simple solution that may or may not work for him.
To say you don't agree is a little harsh given his neighbour might not be on a meter and would be a very easy solution.  Admittedly if his customers are all miles away this wouldn't work, but we don't know that information.

No I don't agree that I was being harsh just pragmatic.
What happens if at some point in the future the neighbour or customer you suggest dies, moves away or they fall out with one another?

Move to an area where the tap water is low tds(mines  028)then you can do away with an RO and purify your water DI only within 30 mins every day....I'm on a water meter and its costs me around £360 a year in water and £180 in resin(2 bags a year) so £540 a year( just over £10 a week)....
price higher/work harder!

I'm on a meter

Input about 270 TDs

RO then resin

The cost isn't really worth worrying about. My water and sewerage charge is about £3 per 1000l which makes 500l of pure

So roughly £5 a day for water.

Running costs are really very very low in this business.

I’m on a meter, and I have calculated that my water costs on average 0.7p per litre, including water charge, sewerage charge, resin, RO membranes and prefilters.

I use about 700 litres a day, so that’s about £95 per month.

When you consider how much you can earn in a month with that water, £95 is peanuts.

So you could half that cost and save £550 a year 🤑
