In Indian culture it is thought to be re-incarnated window cleaners, but I believe it to be a cotton linen cloth that used to be used in tailoring.

Scrim is a simple product of advanced technology. A web-like product, scrim's fibers are chemically bonded. Scrim is superior to other fabrics because the fibers are not crimped by weaving, they can be joined at a greater variety of angles, and scrim can be produced at far greater speeds. You learn something new every day ;D I didn't know they use it for other things although i remember my Dad saying when he was in the fire service they used to use it on the fire engines.
