Lead comimg off glass
« on: August 02, 2019, 02:49:50 pm »
Does any one know why the lead comes of leaded windows is it the glue that fails.
I have a few customers where lead has become loose then bristles exasperate the problem.
Today had a note left insinuating that i had caused the lead to come off on a conservatory this is at least 15 years old maybe older.

I've had this a few times, you can generally see what type of lead is going to cause agro.
For me it's because I use a stiffer brush and so the bristles can easily glide under the lead and consequently loosen the leadwork!

To be honest I can't be doing with swapping my brushes over so just ease up on the pressure ::)roll

tell them its not your job to go round fixing their old leaded windows.....i have a few properties where the lead is coming off....the thing is its always been badly glued onto the glass, they ve always been loose bits here and there.....then i have other jobs where the window fitter has done a proper job and the lead doesnt come unstuck.......

not your problem mate.......

Glue is a bit strong - its more like a double sided tape - where this happens we put a small amount of super glue Gell on the lead then gentle roller the lead with a wallpaper paste roller

When I first started on wfp from trad, I had a customer with leaded windows and not once whilst I was dry clothing (buffing) them, did any lead come loose. Yet the customer was asking about the brush etc and if its OK for the lead etc and I reassured her not to worry. It's a specialist brush etc etc etc.
Five minutes later and I've peeled back a line of leading  :o :o
Super glue sorted that out and I've never made that mistake again

Explain it is nothing to do with how you clean the windows and that it’s that the glue has worn out.

Tell her you can repair it, do so with superglue and you now have another income stream. 😂

I've noticed this very warm spell of weather has made the problem a whole lot worse. The heat has obviously made the adhesive fail at a quicker rate than usual.
Had one that I had to let go recently although the lady was very understanding and actually still wanted me to clean the lower panes and leave out the leaded ones. I just told her it was related to the age of the windows and that the heat had exasperated the problem (which in my opinion it had as there were a couple of dodgy pieces but on my return I was very surprised at how many had lifted).

I have seen some very strange things with leaded windows, some of it well before I started with wfp.

Lead bubbling up over the joints, (which if brush bristles get under will lift it right off in strips)

Lead that has moved across the glass even though still stuck firmly to the glass, (have seen this numerous times both before switching to wfp and after, both outside and in between double glazing) and before they had ever been touched by a professional window cleaner.

Lead peeling off the glass between the double glazing (obviously nothing to do with any cleaning method) and some that has just popped off the glass with no apparent warning when my brush has gone over it (poor adhesion as if fitted correctly with quality materials this wouldn’t happen).

I have a number of customer’s whose windows are very old, 20-30 years, and the lead on them is still firmly in place even though the seals have gone on some and there is condensation visible between the panes.

You can buy the rolls off Amazon, peel and stick variety. Just cut to length and replace. It looks a little out of place for a couple of months, it develops a nice patina and just blends right in. A flocked brush always helps too

Took on what in my opinion is one of the best house's in the area but it's very old around the edges, you'd need a million to buy it and some balls to renovate it. Windows are leaded and I spotted a couple of sh!t repairs which both leak. I'd normally walk away as soon as I seen a leak but I'll just need to work round them, maybe even get the wee ladder out and scrim it.

If the lead comes off surely the glass will come out?
We’ve a few old properties that require a gentle touch. Not sure about applying glue or stuff to listed windows.
