What do you mean by vehicle checks?
Are you for real ? your guys need to fill out a vehicle check list before heading out to work, legally every driver should be doing this but an employee has put it in writing.
Wrong, they dont legally have to do that. Sorry to disagree yet again but thats wrong.
To answer the actual question here we do not do vehicle checks. Instead each van goes to Renault every 6 months and anything that either needs to be done or is likely to need to be done within the next 6 months gets done regardless of the cost.
I keep telling you, this guy is an idiot who's best ignored.
A vehicle operated on company business is not subject to the same legislation as for larger vehicles operated over 3,500 kg and after all it’s just a van or a car and the driver is responsible for it. In turn many drivers also believe that it’s just a tool for the job (I’m just employed as a plumber, engineer etc…) and it’s not their responsibility to check the vehicle. This leads to no one regularly checking or looking after the vehicle.
Any vehicle used should be fit for purpose and in a legal and roadworthy condition. Driver’s must complete vehicle daily checks, these are to be recorded by the company and it be recorded that drivers are completing these checks.
Any defects that are found on the vehicle checks must be reported, recorded and repairs actioned. These checks can be recorded by manual sheets or via electronic systems and must be made available if requested by bodies such as the Police, VOSA or HSE.
If a vehicle is found to be defective, which is usually following a roadside check or accident, the penalties carry heavy fines and can lead to custodial sentences for Driver’s, Transport Manager’s and Company Directors.
Below is a link of to how to carry out daily checks as produced by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) as well as a copy from the DVSA of what should be checked and an example of a Daily Check Sheet as produced by Brake.
