No. I had a waterworks jobbie, which I disposed of, unnecessarily.

Then went over to putting a DIY job together, which works as intended but it does drag when unreeling. I want it to be free-flowing, I dont want to have to 'work to just unreel it.  I think with the cog on th spindle there is just no room left and it catches on the reels framework.

So, I suppose the question should have been, what is the best reel to buy if you're wanting to make it in to a D.I.Y. electric.

Have you been using the clover leaf types for the D.I.Y ?

I have 2 leccy reels on clover type reels, you can get the cogs not to catch but it's tight.

Also I find the spindles don't always run true which puts the cog off centre, mine have suffered chain twist over time which eventually results in chain coming off. New chain sorts it.

Also over time chains stretch so a tensioner would be good.

I think Nathan uses a pure freedom reel which looks better for the job.


This is something I have been thinking about recently, my next reels will be two nice manual ones that I convert to electric.

As nice as the grippa and pure freedom leccy ones look £700 quid or more a piece is a p take for £50 worth of bits .

with the money you earn matt  just buy a decent one like the PF reelmaster,i love mine,much better than the waterworks reels....unless you like fannying about with DIY.....

I like fanning about with DIY.

I would go with a purpose built one but do find it hard to justify that kind of money. Im not saying I wont get one but its not easiest the pill to swallow.

Part of it is Ive got a 9K tax refund due so kinda looking to invest. Im thinking of getting a new Extreme pole and range of brushes to try.  Apart from that, part of it is I find window cleaning boring and new toys always help.

No probs apart from accessing the chain if it came off.

So is that cog bolted onto the reel housing, the side-wall?

Yep. You also need to trim the red buffer/bearing.

I just looked at that. I wonder if it would be easier when putting the reel back together you have the awkwardness of getting the screwdriver on the bolt heads whether to exchange the bolts for ones with a nut on the end rather than relying on trying to squeeze a screwdriver in there

You can do, previously i have done this and used a small spanner on the nut which was at the cog side. But i found this to be faffy as well. However you may not.
Theres also a variety of nuts and tightenings out there that might be more suitable as well. 
More than not u will do a better job than what i have and will have to share ur findings.

i found the clover leaf reel dragged becuase it moved to the righ a little .. and this also caused the chain to jump off.

I got 2 bits of wire and unravelled the hose and just wired the left inside to the reel so it stayed in one position.  problem solved.  I also put grease on the moving parts once a week to help keep things moving.

i know 2 window cleaners with the waterworks reels and they say the hose jumps off the sides occasionally as the reel is so narrow,there is no bar across to prevent this from happening......

the PF one is wider and you can fit 100m microbore on it comfortably,it also has a bar across to stop the hose jumping off the sides,it has snag protection and soft start as well as a digital display with battery reading(which is handy)and speed control(0-99)....

its really fast to wind in on 99!and feels a lot more sturdy than the waterworks reel....it has an enclosed chain but you can take the guard off and access the chain if it comes off(mines never comes off since i had it fixed).....

it also has an industrial grade brass rotary joint on the side of the reel which is great,it never leaks! 

if you order one dont forget to choose the option for hot water use(they fix metal discs over the existing discs to prevent warping due to heat).....

i had a problem with the chain coming off all the time from day one...in the end i drove to PF and they replaced all the mechanical parts,chain.... the lot! it works like a dream now........their chief engineer was baffled as to why i was having this  problem as they ve had very little problems with these reels....i dont know any other WCs who have had problems TBH.....

it was easy to put the chain back on,a 5 min job but it shouldnt of been happening....all sorted now.its never missed a beat for the last 6 months since it was fixed.....
