Does frost damage hoselok connections or pump?
« on: January 24, 2019, 12:01:38 pm »
Since yesterday morning when everything froze in the van I’ve had air issues with the flow.
Every after disconnecting the outlet and blasting it through you can still hear air in the pump, and the flow is so poor I’m struggling to work.

Now this Shurflo is connected by Hoselok fittings which I know aren’t the best, but it’s been fine so far...
Did the frost affect them, or do I have pump problems?
I hope not as I’ve only had it 9 months, and the last one only lasted a year.
Previous one to that lasted ten years!

just keep connecting and disconnecting while your pumps running on full....it might take 5 mins but the airlock will finally go.....
price higher/work harder!

Frost can damage a pump but you'll know because it'll leak.

Sounds like there's either an airlock or still some ice in there. I use the Mrs Soupy's hairdryer to thaw out the pump.

Plastic hates the cold weather I had my pre filters out in the freezing weather a few years ago,I went out in the morning just literally tapped them and it looked like someone had gone across em with a samurai sword they snapped clean off both of the plastic houseings.

Think it must be the pump. Connected hose directly to it, eliminating the hoselok, and it still sounds like it’s sucking in air.
Have run it fast in the usual way to get air out and it’s just making that airlock sound when you put it back on.
7 degrees all night, so no ice in there

Do these pumps use a little fan to push the water out?
A customer suggested a piece of ice yesterday morning could have broken a few blades

No. They are diaphragm pumps.

Stick a hot water bottle over the pump for 10 mins

Just an idea buddy. I know sometimes a connector or pump may seem to take ages to defrost sometimes.

Hope you sort it ok.

Plastic is not the problem, it is the water freezing and expanding which cracked your plastic.

I have had a metal fitting shear in extreme frost, but not a plastic one.

Only 2 things I can think of are either split diaphram or the pressure switch has jammed on , I am assuming of course that you do use a strainer and that your pressure switch is active , if it does not get used with whatever flow controller you use you can discount that idea .
Either way you need to strip it to some degree .
Oh the pump is sited low yes , that could be another issue .
I'm so lazy I'm getting tired of it !

Someone once said that their pump froze which displaced the diaphram. Unscrewing the pump housing body and refitting the diaphram sorted the problem out.

If the pump is sucking air then I would be looking for a hairline crack if the hose from the tank to the pump is properly sealed at each connection.

If you have a prepump filter/strainer I would also look at that. Is it sucking in air at the gasket between the filter bowl and the housing? Has the filter bowl cracked?

I have my pump fixed at the top of the tank. I de-pressurize system at end of day so water drains back from pump to tank, so if water freezes overnight it does not damage the pump.
