New Clabber hose reel how to bolt to van floor.
« on: January 17, 2019, 07:58:49 am »
Hello as some of you followed I'm rather close-minded when it comes to DIY. going to have to do my best and learn hopefully with some of your help
So my spare van has one of these which I purchased recently they have basically drilled holes in the hose reel and it sits on some wood which is raised.
I was just wondering how do you  get the wood on the van floor? is it drilled to the floor or is it stuck on with some very strong adhesive?

I purchased this for my main van and I would like to install it to be drilled in because I had one before and eventually it fell apart but they seem really good when they drill then. I think it was all the putting it on the floor and throwing it back in the van
Thx!

i use a thick piece of chipboard at the back of my tank(cut to fit snugly between the wheel arches)covered it in black plastic sheeting and stapled......

i simply screw my reel to the chipboard....no need to "glue" it to the van floor!i change it every few years for a fresh piece as the wood starts to rot....

Chipboard & water ???

If you're gonna do it that way then marine ply would be better, preferably with a lick of oil based paint. More expensive granted.

Alternatively you could use 22mm talon pipe clips direct to van floor or ply lined floor.

I use tanalised roof battens (from the local timber merchant). I have attached these to the rear load eyes using carriage bolts, one batten each side of the load eye - so they are pretty secure. Once these are in place you can make a small raised timber frame attached to these battens to your own design using L-shaped brackets and screws.

I now use an electric reel but when I had my old Claber reel I bolted this to a piece of raised timber (which was part of this frame) using U-shaped bolts.

I'll try & remember to post some photos tomorrow.

Hi thanks for the replies sorry been working late went to the gym you know what it's like.
Right so the part that confuses me is obviously you have the blocks of wood but how are they secured?
The plywood is a little bit rotten in places and quite thin. How do you secure several centimetres of wood where the hose reel will sit many thanks

thick chipboard is fine with black plastic sheeting stapled over it,my girlfriend has always got bits of wood and stuff knocking about in her garage(shes an interior designer/arty/crafts sort of person)so it cost me nothing and does the job....it lasts a few years before it starts to rot....

You can bolt it into the floor, just be careful where your drilling holes

i use a rectangle PLANK of chipboard 3 times thicker than plywood that fits at the back of my tank (tight between the wheel arches) and sits on top of my plastic load liner.....no need to "secure" it to anything!its fairly heavy and covers the whole area from the back of my tank to the edge of my van floor near the back doors.just screw the reel to it...job done....saves drilling through your van floor....

you dont need to stick the wood down to the van floor when it covers the whole van floor area from the back of your tank....

Fix battens to load ties with carriage bolts:

From battens build rest of frame using L-shapedbrackets:

Final setup - a bit rough & ready but I'll moving this to my new Fiat Doblo soon & will make it a bit smarter:

On this pic you can clearly see the reel bolted down(I've since got rid of the extra bit of wood that the reel sits on so it's all on one level)

From the photos it looks like you could pull both chipboard & reel out of the van if you reel out too sharply.

Appreciate all the photos and everyone's responses. Gosh I think what you're saying is wedge the wood in. In the last photo though it looks like that it's not wedged in at all and it looks bolted to the floor.? By the way what is the floor it looks like some sort of mat. I think I still need to look carefully at your photos to try and understand it  ???
Regarding the bracket I think that's the problem I don't think I've been advised to drill into the van floor
