Resin not lasting so long.
« on: December 09, 2018, 12:19:18 pm »
I don't know if its the poor quality of the resin they sell these days or something else but just recently (last eighteen months or so) the resin I use in my 25 litre cannister only lasts around a month before tds starts creeping up! It used to last around 3 months.
Anyone else noticed this?

Has your tap TDS risen?

Ours did back in May jumped from 60 to 178!!! Forced us to go full RO (which was not a bad thing)

People think DI vessels are indestructible. They're not.

Unless we are all reporting the bad batch numbers back to the supplier there is nothing we can do.

I had a bad bag from one of this forums better suppliers.  I reported the bad bag them and they said no others have been reported to back the issue up with.

No wonder we are being screwed

I've had my DI vessels for over 8 years now and there still as good as the day I bought them and I'm DI only....

I've not had a bad batch of resin since I switched to gardiners from a different supplier a few years ago...
price higher/work harder!

I've stopped using it completely. As long as my RO gets the water down below 10 ppm which it does for a couple of years then I just use RO water no resin no spotting on glass or quality issues from customers.

Resin has always been variable, I've noticed good and bad batches for years. Its not a new thing

Just possibly a side issue, but are you monitoring your TDS readings from Your ro? As the membrane gets older resin use will increase.

I don’t think that’s true? I thought when your membrane fails it fails big time? As in not just creeps up.

Also I always thought resins were basically the same. I always used Gardiner’s & then switched to  Ionics because it was slightly cheaper. After a couple of years I seemed to be getting through a lot more but just put it down to increased water usage. When I switched back to Gardiner’s it has lasted so much longer although it has coincided with a considerable tap tds drop so is hard to compare. I will stick to the Gardiner’s one though now.

No, as the membrane ages, The output TDS starts to creep up. Pure production will slow, and resin use will increase. Knowing what your membrane outputs is key to knowing when it needs replaced.

My current ro produces 000 but I still DI anyway.  8)

Good old Scottish water. Should be good with all the bloomin rain we get.

Just got a bag of Tulsion for the first time in around two years although I don't ever remember having anything worth complaining about regards the longevity of resin and hopefully it stays that way. However for those that are consistent with there usage might notice any drop in performance and they might have some argument but.... All it would take is for the supplier to suggest some unnoticed pipe works near by to cause a spike in the tds?

Window cleaners are the first to complain about complainers and are the first to complain about anything else ;)

I personally find Ionics resin better than the Tulsion resin these days, even some of the ‘better’ batches from Gardiners.

Not really such an issue for me anymore though since my home water went from 030 to 380 overnight.

 ???

Would that not make it more of an issue?

No. I used to be DI only, using a bag every 4 weeks or so. I’m now RO and my water before DI is now 004, hence using a lot less resin.

Not sure.

I'd suggest that there are too many variables for you to adequately prove that the resin is 'faulty'.
