Install in the side of the tank, the lower down  the better. 3kw would be best but you would need a sparky to fit a 16 amp socket.

I was going to plug my 3kw immersion into my extention socket that I run to my van to charge my leisure batteries  is that   no no?
I'm an electricians nightmare so I need some guidance 😅

id have a rethink if i were you jon......you could cause a fire.....pay for an electrician to rig you up a 16amp socket you tight git!

I not knocking anyone for getting a diesel heater - they work - they are safe - they are a nice luxury to have what they are not are essential those spouting about quicker cleaning live in a fantasy land

Squeeky's was a 2KW element. The standard "off the shelf" is 3KW. A 3KW element run from a normal 13amp socket will overload the electrics to the point of melting the plugs- trust me, I did it!! Personally, I wouldn't run 2KW constantly for such a long time either. Just like a domestic immersion heater or electric cooker, your van immersion heater need to be wired on it's own line dirct from the main consumer unit via 16amp cable, sockets/plugs/timer and breaker. All the parts are freely available and cheap- about £50 for everything mentioned above. It's also a very easy job for a sparky- the hardest bit being running  a cable from consumer unit to a plug (internal or external) near your van. If your consumer unit is close to the point where you want the plug then it's even easier.
DO IT PROPERLY- IT'S CHEAP AND PRETTY SIMPLE AND COULD SAVE YOU BURNING YOUR HOUSE DOWN!

try to get a 2kw as you won't need a 16amp socket or seperate cable to the fuse box

2kw should be fine to run for several hours its well inside the limit of 3kw - electric fires can be 2kw and are used over many hours
use good quality cable like artic flex and dont have it coiled uo
