I'm thinking of installing an immersion heater
I have a 650ltr flat tank, I usually put about 550 litres in daily
What size in KWs would i need?
Do you install in the side of the tank or does it need to be at the top?
I haven't a clue  so any tips would be welcome
And no Daz, I ain't buying a diesel heater 🤣🤣
Mainly I want to use  softer hoses and not run it piping hot

Install in the side of the tank, the lower down  the better. 3kw would be best but you would need a sparky to fit a 16 amp socket.

And try and get as big an element as you can., for instance mine is 27inches long 😏
Use a mechanical flange as well and install as low down as you can. Mine allows the element to pass underneath the central divide in a 500ltr upright tank.  Simply lower the backing nut down with some string, it's really easy to do

good luck with cutting a hole in your tank...... ..make sure its slightly too small for a tight fit.....

Screwfix do all you need if you must do it,you need something called a boss I think that’s the thread on the outside of the tank for the immersion to screw into to hold it place. You’ll also need to put extra money away for all that extra electric you’ll be using.

I don't intend to use it all the time
I'm just sick of cold hoses kinking and it'll warm the van on cold nights as well, at least keep it above freezing ☺️

Depends what your rates are for kilowatt hours used!
I have a day n nite meter, so at night it's about 7.5p per kilowatt hour. So from midnight till 7am it costs me 15p per hour,  so £1.05 for the night. But day time would cost me 30 pence per hour for a 2kw per hour.
So not very expensive, but it depends on your packages and running times. ( so 22.5p at night per hour on a 3kw element for me, or 45p day per hour)

Out of interest and excluding Nathan, who has super cheap electric, how long do you have your immersion on for?
The cost over a month seems to average about £80.
Not sure about recording for tax either, at the moment recording the nights its on and then will times it by the cost.

Just guessing, but that seems on the high side
I wouldn't pay £80 for supple hoses and frost protection

Hi John, there’s some good threads on here about immersion fitting. You have to check back a bit.
What you need is :
*A mechanical flange ( this is what the immersion will screw into ).
- This is why you need to cut a hole in the tank, to accept the flange. Once the hole is cut ,you place the boss end (with threaded section in the boss, where the  immersion element screws in) of the flange on outside of tank and you push it through so that the other part of the flange set-up, the washer, on the inside of tank, screws and holds the flange solidly in place.

*Hole cutter - can’t remember the size  , but I’ve got one if you want to borrow it.

*Decent cable that’ll take the 3kw.
I also used a waterproof sealant just to make sure!!

The costs are based on a 5 night useage each week. You dont have to use it all the time, in milder weather I use cold.
Warm hoses are one benefit but the greatest one for me is faster and more effective rinsing. Also warm water cleans great.
I do two to three more jobs a day in the same time with warm so ome of those covers the cost.
