Wages of sin and modern slavery
« on: November 19, 2018, 12:37:47 pm »
Just as a curio I was looking in the jobs section and was shocked to see how much window cleaners are paid in real life
Not the fantasy numbers quoted on the forum over the years
I get an email from a site giving details if window cleaning jobs. In and around London
The Avarage wage is £75 per day
In central London and as low as 15,000 a year for out of town
Firstl who could survive on 75 a day ?
Could you survive on that having to get to say Farringdon by 5 am every day pay 15 per day on travel  and the last time I was there a bacon sarnie and tea cost 12.50  from a small side street cafe
No wonder these jobs don't get filled and boy oh boy am I pleased I work independently for myself
What's the worst wage on offer where you are ?

,£75 a day wouldn't be a bad wage for a employee window cleaning in the Midlands where I am.

your looking at it all wrong - who's says you can stop and get a bacon sarnie and tea every day - bring your own sarnies and a flask of coffee - as PAYE you get everything paid including holidays - also the system encourages this type of low wage as you can top up with all sorts of benefits bringing the wages up by other means

75 a day is cr@p but people don't always have a choice and certainly I don't think at that level it does the company much good for getting a decent employee - however watching some of the big boys and the way they clean or lack of, they don't give a flying f**k about standards

£75 per job yeah 😂 if you were to sit down and work it all out what most people who employ pay it’ll amount to a similar amount very similar,15-20k a year I bet not many on here pay a lot more than that in reality especially if they work in a pair or work out of a company van.
Wait for all the employers to come on here and start on about bonus if all work is done reliability bonus etc 😂,they’ll end up with about the 75 in there pay packet before Tax.

I dont know why the surprise

Minimum wage is £7.83 or  £62.64 an 8 hour day.

People do live on this and in some cases live fairly well depending what other beneifts they are entitled to.

£75 a day is over £9 an hour, a very respectable wage at least here in the north.

The only reason we "couldnt live on those peanuts" is because we are used to earning more.

I am 36, until 4 years ago when i started window cleaning...so since i left school... i never earned more than £8 a n hour. I didnt see myself as poor or skint.

As an example, you could have a couple with say 3 kids, one not working and the other doing say 15k a year and you could get that topped up to say 25k in housing benefit, child tax credits, working tax credits and child benefits. Not to mention things such as free dentists, prescriptions, eye tests, school meals etc.

Quite a few couples or single parents with kids are caught in the poverty trap and don't see the point in going out on a limb to lose it for a few extra quid, don't blame them.  It's a hard trap to get out of when/if you're in it.
I was lucky as I use  to fabricate on site back in the early 90's for up to £200 a day but it was ok as hotel bills, travel expenses and meals were paid for by employer, enjoyed that job until the company went bust.

There’s people all over my town and the northwest who would love to be able to earn £75 a day. Different world up here than some of you lads in the Home Counties realise.

There's window cleaners here get paid less and I'm pretty sure that's about what a postman earns.

Food banks have been booming in the past few years.

We've also had a decade of extremely high migration which has depressed wages...

Similar story here, but with internal migration pressures on top.  They're reducing the Severn Bridge tolls to zero (it joins England and Wales), so we're swamped with Bristolians moving over to here because of the cheaper house prices, but it's forcing ours up and it's expected to keep on increasing to 2021.

What could've bought you a 3 bed semi 10 years ago, won't buy you a 1 bedroomed flat now.  Yet due to mass immigration, wages for the past decade have been stagnant.

Still, the foreigners haven't stopped you earning more than ever, eh?
