I put my business cheques into a Santander Small Business account (I'm still on the "free forever" terms).
I realise that some on here no longer take cheques but, of those who do, has anyone else noticed that they now clear very quickly.  If I put a cheque in the ATM on a Monday, it's now clear by Wednesday morning.
Is this just Santander or are other banks doing this too?

New changes for all banks as far as i'm aware, came into effect end of September ( should be 1 day clearance times for cheques eventually)

Not sure “it’s the law”

Last statement I saw said the transition starts Oct 17 and by the end of 2018 everything would then be processed in one  working business day

That's such a great system. It'll be a while before it gets to Santander.

I'm with Natwest.  Cheques are posted to my account on the day they are banked if before 4pm I think it is.

I have an overdraft facility set up and my account is in credit. If there was no money in my account and I had used up my overdraft limit as well then the cheque would only credited to my account when it had cleared. I got that answer a couple of years ago when I asked.

It was at the same time I was complaining about them closing all our local branches barr one. Their answer was that the post office accept Natwest deposits. Cash paid in at the post office was credited next day, but cheques took 4 days when I tested the system.

I usually bank on a Saturday morning. There was a new teller a few months ago and she said that my cheques would only reach my bank account the following Friday. So I presume when we had the conversation the same clearance times applied.

My first job for leaving school was in the bank. In those days each cheque was handled via the Reserve Bank.  If you banked an out of town cheque you wouldn't see it posted to your account for at least 14 days.

HSBC shows as "cheques in" the day after depositing. I often bank on a Friday and the amount appears in my account on the Saturday. But it is all cheques aggregated, whether one or (eg) ten.

I don't think they "clear" for a few days; but they do show as a total paid in balance. Dunno because I don't run my business account anywhere close to zero.

But I think it's something like 50p for paying in cheques PLUS 30p for each cheque. So one check will cost 80p, two cheques £1.10, three cheques £1.40 and so on. So unless it is a larger cheque of over, say £100 then I wait until I have at least four or five before paying them in.

Cash I pay in for free into the joint account with the current Mrs. AuRavelling79.

I wouldn’t mind but cashier was talking to a customer about babies then told me I could have done at atm

We got rid of cheques in March.  Best thing we did in years.

I did consider it myself, but decided to continue for two reasons:

1) It would have meant dropping about 40 customers at a time when I am canvassing new work.

2) Although it's a bit more labour intensive for me (scanning cheques onto the computer for my records and depositing them) it's not such a huge deal really.  This is mainly because I live a five-minute walk from the bank and I can deposit out of hours into the ATM.

If my workload were oversubscribed and/or I lived miles from the bank, I may have ditched cheques too.  So I suppose it's about individual circumstances.
