Self Driving Vans....Would you?
« on: September 09, 2018, 03:54:46 pm »
Was reading an article about the future of Self Driving Cars and how close we are to them to be part of the market.

If they were to introduce Self Driving Vans to the showroom range would you buy?

I would find it useful to allow the vehicle to take me to each location whilst I enjoy my lunch or do a bit of paperwork to make some call or maybe just surf the forum  ;D

It’s on the way but still think it will be years before the whole concept is a reality , look at the high profile cases in America where people have been killed by the driverless cars , we have had self parking cars since 2008 I believe a friend of mine has a Tiguan that age with it , but to be able to recognise a junction ,traffic lights and everything else is a different ball game , would I buy one ? No thanks not for me to much to go wrong and I wouldn’t want to trust it , but at some point it will probably happen

There was one over here in the Uk driverless vehicle involved in an accident. I would hate to have to try claiming against a hit and run driver less vehicle. I can see them doing a runner at the first opportunity of blame. Will be a sad day when it comes in legalised.

Personally, i think driverless vehicles will only have a ltd use in the real world. Much like the 3d tv craze in 2015.

Trains, planes, large boats & ships have all been essentially driverless for decades but still need a captain at the helm to make critical descisions, and more importantly take responsibility for human life.

Driverless cars as they are currently and will be for the next 10 or 20 years are in essence a fad, simply because the computing technology is good enough now to make it work but they havent yet worked out what sort of consumer market it will generate.

I see buses and public transport going driverless, cars..yes they will have driverless features, but i do feel the majority of people will want to drive thier vehicles.

What is the point of buying a vehicle that drives itself without your input? Just think about it, loads of people all getting into thier vehicles, whilst it drives them to their job, so they can work to pay for the vehicle that drove them to work?

One thing is for sure, mental health will be an even biggger issue than it is now.

I love driving my golf gtd so no I wouldnt buy a self driving car....I also wouldn't buy a self driving van either.....

By the way who would be liable in the event of an accident?the vehicle company? ???it's certainly a grey area that'll need to be clear before people will buy them......
price higher/work harder!

Mind you.  If cars were self driving I am sure there would be less accidents compared with all those muppets on the roads these days

I even begrudge using self-serve checkouts, sod having a self-driving van.

No.
There are too many decisions I make on the fly whilst working on my round with regards to the order I do things. Be it, time of day, parking spaces, bin collections, delivery vans blocking streets, roadworks etc.  Even if SDV's became common place I cannot see these situations being taken into account. I'd be forever tapping in new coordinates and faffing about rather than working. Our jobs require more than a simple journey of A to B.

Added to that I would be far too unerved by it to kick back with my head in my phone/laptop ! :o

Can't wait. Driving used to be a pleasure, now it's a chore.

SDVs will drastically clear the roads. Why would you buy a car (unused 96% of the time on average) when you had an on-demand, driverless taxi to take you everywhere for a little more than the current cost of driving your own car? Once that model's sunk in, there'll be enough vehicles in the UK for peak times only. Road won't be full of parked cars; you'll get out and they'll bugger off either to collect someone else or park away from houses. Journeys will be quicker.  There'll be no need for traffic lights. I'll be able to read for 95% of my journey time.

Bring it on, I say.

It doesn't feel right - unnatural.
I've been driving myself for 47 years and I don't intend to stop.
