Your partner.
« on: September 02, 2018, 02:57:36 pm »
By the time I went limited, Mrs 8 weekly was already leafleting 10 hours a week, doing credit control and no longer in other full time employment. So it was a natural thing that she got 50% of the business and still does the “fadmin” as she calls it.

I just wondered what others do in their businesses? Do they share the ownership?

My wife works full time but I still used to put her through the books at £120 per week, she paid the full 20% tax on her wage I gave her,  in doing this I was effectively reducing my tax bill as I was saving 9%  NI on the £120. Stopped when she got promotion  at work which meant the wage I paid her would be taxed at 40%.

My accountant actually cautioned me against the 50%.

Not something that you want to think about but it's better if dissolving your marriage doesn't lead to dissolving your business.

I pay my Mrs a small wage per week for water filtration duties, txt the night before duties, administration duties, filling the van up at night duties, estimates of jobs duties , cleaning my work gear & cloths duties.
It’s not 50% though , probably should be though

That obviously was his point. Things could certainly get very sticky. But not in a good way.  ;D

Before ltd we were a partnership but now I’m sole director

She is paid 12k per year wages but everything is hers so she tells me😵

50/50 is bad idea 51/49 so there is an overall control

Never argue with an idiot, they will only bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience

I take your point but 50:50 works for us. I make most decisions. Does Mrs Smudger not have shares?

That's totally fine until it isn't.

I get that too! But we’ve been together for 35 years so I reckon we’re good. If you knew me you’d understand that she’d never leave me and I’m not sure I’d survive long on my own.

Maybe it's her that needs 51%?

I  run my business day to day with more and more input and help from my Son as I head towards retirement but often if I reach a sticky wicket, need a sounding board or just some female intuition or input much to his surprise I regularly consult my wife.  I am often amazed when she throws a whole different perspective on a particular problem which is often an angle I have never thought about or even considered.  They often say two heads are better than one, but the difference for me is that my wife is a partner I can trust, who has an investment in our business and owns exactly the same % as me.  Therefore  no competition in my mind, if it were a choice between her or a Board of Directors she wins every time.
