We’ve been asked to quote for cleaning high level steelwork on a factory where we already provide other services. However it’s 100,000 sq ft and quite a daunting task. I’m just wondering if anyone has a pricing structure for internal vacuuming as opposed to gutter vacuuming. Would you price by the job or by the day? I imagine it will take 4 men with 4 vacs a full week. There’s around 60 years of dust built up as it’s never been cleaned. Thanks in advance

What sort of factory - is it dust or other deposits such as grease etc...

Depending on the use of the factory will determine what equipment will be needed

What about access - ? Are planning long reach or small high access machine to get up close ?

There are a lot of questions here that need answering prior to you sorting a quote for this..  I have listed a few below but there will be others I have missed.

1.  Is there high level work involved?  If so do you and any staff have working at height qualifications?
2.  Are you going to use access equipment?  If so  have you priced the purchase or the hire of the correct equipment and do you have the necessary IPAF qualifications to use it?
3.  Is the contaminant all dry or is some of it wet?  Have you costed the hire or the purchase of the correct vacuums and associated PPE?
4.  Are you able to write a full and comprehensive RAMS for this job?
5.  Are you and your staff trained to do this work?
6.  Have you worked out how and where you are going to dispose of the dust / contaminant?
7.  Is there any asbestos or other harmful products involved?

Once you have dealt with the above I would do a test area to try and determine how much manpower and equipment will be involved before trying to work out pricing.

I have a very good friend here in the Midlands who does this stuff day in and day out.  Depending on where you are I may be able to get him to give you a lot more help and advice.

Yes we have iPaf training, it’s mostly high level work. There is a cherry picker on site which we can use for the week. I’ve done a test and it took me 2 hours and probably only covered 0.1% of it😂 it’s thick dust only. But all at about 25ft. I’ve priced two more skyvacs and cameras and it’s £600 for the week. Alsp spoke to the guys at spinnaclean and they said you can buy an internal cleaning kit so you have dust bags to dispose of the dust. So could put 3 operatives on there for a week. Already done a comprehensive rams for the job which they have accepted before I did the high level test.

Tbh you seem to have covered all the bases and sounds straight forward so price would be all your costs plus the daily rates you charge for staff ( personally I’d times it by 1.5 )

Your not making any sense at all!  If it took you 2 hours to do 1% then you can expect to do around 3% of the area per day per man allowing for toilet, coffee, lunch and smoke breaks.  That means 5 men are going to realistically complete 12% per day so that in my calculation I would charge and allow 10 days for.  If it is only 25ft up why not just use 2 x  ground level dust vacs running up to 3 hoses each with a continuous bag system and keep your 5th man as safety and bagging up plus replenish where required.  Your also going to need at least 2 or 3 cherry pickers to keep 4 men working at height
