Transit customs and split relay charger
« on: August 10, 2018, 09:20:31 am »
Hi guys those who have a custom what do you do for a split relay to charge your leisure battery?
Do you need a certain kind as I believe these have a smart alternator?
I currently use a durite intelligent relay in my mk7 and wondered if I could transfer it?

Your durite won’t work with your custom you need something like a sterling pro charge

Do all Ford Customs have regenerative braking? If this van doesn't then all this system is is an intelligent battery to battery seperator with a fancy led voltage guage and will work.

But if the van does have regenerative braking then it won't be long before that auxillary battery is wrecked. A lead acid battery can't handle charging voltages higher than 14.5v. Charging under regenerative braking puts a charge into the battery at between 15.5v and 18v depending on the manufacturer. These higher faster charging voltages are the reason why starter batteries in these vans calcium lead acid batteries now to reduce gassing at higher input voltage charging.

There are numerous (and boring) YouTube videos made by Sterling highlighting the problems that occur with charging leisure batteries with vehicles with regenerative braking.

Their battery to battery chargers are designed to charge the auxillary battery  at lower voltages and draw current from the alternator and boost it up when the ecu puts it into low voltage output.

If there wasn't a problem then there would be no reason to sell a solution.

This issue is even effecting VWT6 vans.

Yes, and after a quick read on the ebay description I’m inclined to agree.
Why don't you have a quick google before making stupid comments?

Don’t you just hate these threads.

Full of people talking with knowledge and experience about intelligent poop that just ‘blinds’ you when you read it.

Can we get back to ‘How often d’you change your squeegee blade?”

my transit connect has regenerative braking and euro 6 engine with different alternators than the older connects so i got grippatank to fit me a smart battery to battery charger to charge my 2 leisure batteries on the go...it works perfectly well.....

im not sure of the technical aspects of it but i was told STANDARD SPLIT CHARGE RELAYS WONT WORK WITH NEW VANS WITH REGENERATIVE BRAKING.......
price higher/work harder!
