I use a personal account connected to my SumUp, I'm also a Sole Trader.

cheers larry...i thought id have to faff about opening another account for a min! ::)roll ;D

Only thing you need to do is make sure your sum up account name matches that of your account name.

Only time you legally need a business account is when you incorporate to LTD status.

yeah it does marc...... :)

ive also been paid out from SumUp for a few jobs already......

So Daz, have you a business bank account? The FAQ's state that your business name and bank account must be the same.

I bank all our takings into my personal account once a week. No personal accounts will be linked to this reader.

The company name registered with SumUp must be the same as that listed on the bank account. Every company must have a company bank account to avoid payment issues. (Meaning personal bank accounts will not be accepted.)

If you are a sole trader there is no legal requirement to set up a business account. As a sole trader is the business no matter what the trading name is.
there no legal requirement to set up a business account, but term and conditions of the banks personal account by the banks will say no business though a personal account

yes we know some do and have but just saying

When i was a sole trader
Natwest once insisted i have a business bank account.

I told them i dont want a businsss account; nor do i legally need one. They threatened to close my account; and i told them if they do i will take them to court for discrimination against self employed individuals; as i am self employed the money i put into my account is my wages; not business revenue. They backed down; but i changed banks in the end to Barclays and LLOYDS, as Natwest got terrible in the end with customer service.

Hi dazmond, no i haven't got a Virtual Terminal, not needed so far, but you never know down the road it could be Handy,
i think you can take payments over the phone, but you have to set this up with SumUp, and you have to log on to your account
from a computer, as far as i understand it you can't do this from your Smartphone SumUp App, and the charge for this transaction is higher.
I think it was last november when i bought the SumUp reader, did all the application stuff and uploading from my computer,
but i had to chase them up with a phone call, to get verification that my application & uploads were all in place, so that my account could go properly Live, without a restriction on transactions, they are based in Germany, hope this helps daz.

Hi Paul, I've started to use mine yesterday, 3 payments and 1 today.
The only downside is there is nowhere to record the customers address. Or am I missing something.
Customers love it though

Nice.

Dont worry about storing customer address on the terminal or app. No need to as you have records on your own customer database database.

All payments are guaranteed so you won't have any need to chase.  No different when using card in a shop.   If a customer requires a refund you just need to ask them to confirm the last 4 digits of their card so you can confirm which payment it is on your portal.

If helps when you go to payment history you can bring up a map of the location you were at when taking the payment.

Ok, so the only thing that relates the payment to the customer is the mobile number, the email address and a map of the where the payment was taken.
That said I haven't had a payment statement yet, if they do one.
I would be much happier if it could take the customers address.

And the last 4 digits of their card and transaction number. And you will get a statment emailed on the payout day.

No address gets taken on any card reader as its not needed or required.

I use Stripe.

No reader needed, download the app and take payments directly via your phone.

That way you can phone your custards and take payment over the phone. There really is no need to go knocking these days.

We used a paypal card reader for while between 2015 and 2017. It came in useful at times. I would say that it worked about 85% of the time; Paypals card reader was okay, but they hadn't quite nailed the technology and made it completely seamless and effort-free.

To start the conversion to Go Cardless, we started to only let new customers book onto the rounds if they had authorised a direct debit.

We also included something on the payment card to encourage customers to move to direct debit. I've pasted the words we used below, here they are:

Here is how it works in three steps.
1. Set up the direct debit at www.oliverthewindowcleaner.com/directdebit
Setting up the direct debit will take you less than two minutes
2. Five days after we've done the work you will receive an email stating the amount that you will pay for your window cleaning.
3. Payment is then made for today's work (and all cleans going forward) completely automatically  and hassle-free.

Here is some more information about direct debit.
•   The company we use is called Go Cardless. Their clients include HM Government and Virgin and you can read about them at www.gocardless.com. All payments are covered by the direct debit guarantee.
•   This is not a monthly direct debit. You will get an email 5 days after we've done the work letting you know that payment is about to be made.
•   You can cancel the direct debit at any time.
•   It's free to use, secure and it saves you time  in the future.

On the subject of adding customer details; i wouldnt bother.  Personally its just more of a risk to data being hijacked.

I just leave a bill; if they are in i encourage payment by card. In 2019 i will no longer be accepting payment by cash; except the very few very elderly customers i have left.

Card is best for cashflow especially PayPal here as the funds are in your company bank account immediately.

BACS is second best because it doesnt cost anything; but only suitable for those customers who are good at paying. If i dont get thier payment within the week; i say that if they are looking for credit then i suggest a direct debit.

Direct debits are taken on the 26th day of the month for me; it saves book keepig time as its just one lump sum that comes through at the end of the month.

Nice one guys.

For me I am about to put a stop to cheques as there is no guarantee on these anymore and a pain to manage and look out for mistakes on the cheques.

I have already been putting an end to cash as its getting to be a dirty word out there as we move towards a cashless society.

Most of my customers either pay on my card machine, use Gocardless or pay BACS these days.
