I can recommend Sumup as another way to take payment using a mobile card reader. It makes you look more professional taking electronic payments rather than cash or cheques. It's a great bit of kit and easy.

It's a good idea to let customers decide which payment method they prefer.

I use the Sum Up card reader to take payments by card on the road.  Really low rates less than 1.69% with no fixed fee or monthly fee.  Much better and cheaper than paypal. You can also take payments over the phone too.

The card reader can be purchase with a discount using this link reduced from £30 to just £15.   ( also helps me with referral reward   )

http://fbuy.me/f7Ve3

You can swipe cards or use chip and pin option or contactless payments. It's fab.

Once you take payment you then can put the customers email or phone number in the app and it will either text or email the receipt straight away for them. Works a treat.

Just use your own card to test it out when you get it first to see how it works. Just take £1 on your own card

I’m gonna get one of these mate, do you have a code so you can claim your referral award?

i also want to be phasing cheques out over the next year or so and moving these customers over to other forms of payment so ill be pushing BACS,standing order or card payments! ;D

Probably due to your £1 test payments.  Jut checked one of mine. I have a simple £10 payment and I received £9.83 which works out at 1.7%

Yes as said before probably because they are just £1 test payments. £1 is the min transaction amount and 10p is the min fee mate.

If you had a customer owing, and you rang them up to chase the payment can you take a payment over the phone with out the cardholder present?

Yes you can by logging in to your account through your browser but as p1 said it charges little more. Just under 3% and a 20p transaction fee.

I use PayPal here, and whilst its not the most popular option; it is the fastest to get paid.

I can take payments from all credit/debit cards including AMEX and Diners

The money is in my business bank account the very second I take the payment from their card. Its really well worth considering.

Last month I  processed £1125 in credit/debit card payments and the total cost for collecting that was £31 so  2.75 % on average

most of us can wait a few days for payments to hit our bank accounts (esp if the percentage charged is lower)as the money is often not needed straight away.over the course of a year if your taking a lot of payments by credit/debit card the charges add up......

If you are looking to grow your business; and you have a few vans with card readers in them; being able to have the funds available in the company bank account the moment the jobs have been paid for when your staff do the work; that's the best possible cashflow you could ask for.  Thats better than BACS, DD, CASH; its better than the lot m8.

Nothing wrong with waiting 3 or 4 days for payments to come through. But running a LTD company with payroll and staff your CASHFLOW is the highest priority especally for growth.

Surely after the first three days you have the card reader, the cash flow is then the same?
(ie, you should have something clearing pretty much everyday after the first three days)

I’m also not entirely sure what potential cashflow problems BACS payments give?

In fairness, you talk a good game and I only have the one chap that works for me, so you must know what you’re talking about...
Why don't you have a quick google before making stupid comments?

you need a virtual terminal to be able to take payments over the phone.you cant do that just by logging into your SumUp account.....theres no VT there.....i think you need to phone customer services first to get it set up.....

i wont be using that feature anyway...mines for taking payments when out and about window cleaning or collecting....

I took a £300 Payment over the phone using my online portal.  Its easy and and asking for card details and 3 digit security number.

Not taken one in the last few month though.  May need to speak with sumup if it's not showing on your portal.  On mine there is an option on the left to take a payment.
