Cleaning moss off roofs from the ground?
« on: July 22, 2018, 01:16:57 pm »
Hi all, im just asking if its possible to clean moss off roofs from the ground?

I have had a look at older threads on this site and from what i can see most people still get up on the roof. I did see a youtube video of a guy spraying the roof from the ground with a long pole / lance and then washing it all down from the ground.

Does anyone on here have any info or advice they can share with me? Id rather not get on the roof if possible...

Probably best trying the general cleaning forum rather than the window cleaning forum.

Been no posts on the general cleaning section for a couple of weeks - less people doing that sort of work and then you have to suffer the little posse who take the moniker of " clean it up god " too seriously

anyways......

the best alternative to not getting on a roof is you use high access equipment - there are a number of smaller 'spider' machines that can fit just about anywhere  so the clean the roof from above ( correct procedure )

what you have seen is soft washing there are several companies promoting this however the soft wash chemical is only effective on very light moss - algae - lichen when you start investigating they recommend to scrap off the moss before treating so your back to square one  ::)roll

also with soft washing you will need to explain that it can take upto 8 weeks for the organic material to die off and then you are still relying on rain to wash it off the surface of the roof

I know a local gardener who does this work.he gets on the roofs via a  ladder and uses a small wire brush while he holds on with his other hand......rather him than me..... ::)roll

I wouldn't even bother doing this type of work unless I had a  training certificate to operate the lift machinery.....

You gotta charge a good wedge for this type of work to cover the cost of  machinery hire as well.....
price higher/work harder!

I got asked to give a quote for Mick Jagger's house. There was none there.
Much to his Satisfaction. I didn't fancy getting Sticky Fingers anyway from all that Dirty Work anyway.

Nice and safe that

With a scaff tower you are still going to get on the roof and that’s a no no for clay and slate roofs

Cost of the machine plus 20% goes on the price of the job - that’s better than doing a half baked job risking serious injury
