My water has a TDS of 300.

I use a Gapswater 4040 with pressure pump. This produces water at 7 ppm.

I don’t bother with resin anymore.
I've often wondered about doing that Slacky.

People saying using RO is too much faff...

LOL

10 minutes flushing and that’s it. It fills your tank, it stops when it’s full.

You might have to go to the HUGE effort of changing the pre filters once every 3 months, that’s a game-changing 15 minute job.

when i say faff...im on a water meter and no room for a storage tank plus it takes ages to make 500L of pure using an RO..i can purify 500L in less than 30 mins DI only.... :)

I’m also on a water meter, and also do not have a storage tank.

My water costs £3.10 per 1,000 litres (that’s including the sewage charge), so, because RO uses twice as much water as resin alone,  that means each fill of 700 litres costs £2.17 MORE than using resin alone.

Assuming 4 fills per week, and 4.3 weeks in a month, that’s an additional monthly cost of £37.32 in extra water.

Even in a softish water area, I don’t think you could purify 12,000 litres of water using only DI for less than £37, therefore the cost of using RO is less than DI.

As for it taking ages, so what?

It takes approx 4 hrs to fill my 700 litre tank, and so what about it?

You set it filling and forget about it, that’s the whole point.

Yes resin is faster, but I don’t see why that’s an advantage?

when you take in the cost of an RO,buying membranes and pre filters etc AND the extra cost of waste water im sure itll cost more than my £4-50 a week i spend on resin.even if it cost a bit more DI only id still stick with DI for convenience alone. ;)

also even after RO your water wont be at 000 anyway so you still need a bit of resin to get it to 000!im out! ;D

3 x £83 bags of resin a year=£249 a year divided by 52 is £4.78 a week........tap tds 029........

11 x £37(extra water, take a month off for holidays)=£407 and that doesnt include the cost of the RO/membranes etc and your water is still not at 000 after RO!plus it takes longer to purify!no thanks!

I’m pretty sure any ride in TDS would be minimal because in general your in a soft water area so bore hole water added to one treatment plant is not going to be significant

Hard water areas have high TDS due to the rock structure where the water is ( that’s my understanding )

Darran

The hardness of the water depends where the water comes from. At present it’s rainwater that has been sat in a reservoir so therefore is soft. The new stuff they will be blending in with this water will be from a borehole, sat on rock so will be hard. If it’s a 50/50 mix or a 2/98 mix will be the deciding factor on the hardness at the tap.

Will find out tomorrow I guess.

our water comes from reservoirs but still is 350 TDS due to the ground - you can get Malvern spring water straight out of the ground  almost devoid of TDS passing through rocks

so my point is the water in your area is naturally soft because of the ground ( bottom of the reservoir or whatever ) so i suspect your TDS rise will be nominal ( unless they start importing it from east anglia  ;D

RO water cleans better, has better glide on the glass, restores sun damaged upvc, makes hydrophobic glass hydrophilic,  melts concrete, removes bird poo and snail trails quicker, makes your customers love you, why everybody doesn't use it is beyond me.

I do bits of work around the north west, I noticed a reservoir up Blackburn/burnley ways yesterday and it was scraping the barrel......... There's another backside of Manchester I think near Bredbury/Ashton ways this was down a good bit also.

I am DI only also and best levels of water I can get is 085, even with these levels I go through a bag of resin a month and not really a major amount of wfp work

Time to set a 4040 up somewhere in the van soon I be thinking

I changed from twin Di to 4040 start of this year, best thing I done and I know its gonna Dave me a shed load over resin, one of the things that made me do it was the resin is getting worse quality over the years I’m sure of it and all I’ve ever used is mb115, like others said once you’ve got your ro set up its simple and no hassle, I was changing a di Bottle every 3 weeks at 76ppm and using 4-500 litres a day!

Right now I have a 450l tank, Di only in the van. Probably once every week I’ll run out of water, usually on large jobs that are local. I just nip home for my lunch and in 40 mins I can have another full tank ready to go. I couldn’t do this if I needed to go through an RO.

Get a bigger tank etc etc, not possible as 450l is as big as my van can carry without going over the payload.

If you need an extra fill quickly just bypass the RO, you're still going to be saving on resin costs the rest of the week.
With a decent water pressure and a tap tds as low as yours your could probably run your waste water at around 40% or less and fill a 450ltr tank in about an hour and a half.

I try and work it so I have a full tank of water in the van and a storage tank full of water also.
So that if/when I run out of water during the day I can make a quick trip home and fill up again which takes about 5 minutes.

It’s not very often tbh Daz, just when I want to work very long days, usually when working locally.  450l does me for the majority of my days but like this week when cleaning a big college that’s non stop poling, 450l isn’t enough.

I’d hate to have to drive a massive van that’s capable of carrying an 800l tank. My second van is a LWB custom and I’d hate to drive that, I much prefer my small Berlingo.
