United Utilities - warning
« on: July 18, 2018, 04:01:25 pm »
Have just had a letter through from UU telling me that my blend of water will be changing from 20th July.  My water is currently 75ppm and I’m DI only. The new water is going to be drawn from a bore hole and will be mixed with the reservoir water.

THIS NEW WATER COULD HAVE A TDS OF 350 (or more)

I’m Warrington (WA4) based but I’m told that this is not just localised but for the whole of the NW region. Might be time to buy an RO fellas. 👎

Not much change for me then , I’m with United utilities and mine is around 270. But thanks for letting us know 👍

Isn't an RO worth it at 75? Unless you're on a meter.

Think 75 is bordeline with my usage. My water actually fluctuates between 029 and 075 but it has been 075 for quite awhile now.

Not a big problem for me really as I was going to purchase an RO at some point but for the lads like Dazmond who’s water is consistently 029 it will be a problem.

Is it a temporary measure?
I would imagine letting the water feed down from a reservoir with gravity would be cheaper than drawing it from a borehole. So maybe it will revert back once the rains come in earnest.
I can't help thinking they are creating a drama for some reason.

Last week their reservoirs were 79% full. The problem was that they were having difficulty purifying enough water for the network. Now we see photos in the paper this week of all their empty, dried out reservoirs. Something just doesn't add up.

It doesn’t specify a timeframe but does say
“We propose to continue to use this source of water in the future as and when required”.

Mine is still 075. It is quite specific that the water will blend on 20th July so just keep your eye on it.

How long would you be prepared not to work for Daz, or use water at 350 through your DI rather than buy an RO?

Oh and I wouldn’t move to Salford for all the tea in China 😂

Our friends in New Mills got a letter about 10 days ago and they said they were future proofing the system and preparing for every eventuality. Nothing said about water quality but it did give the impression that they had already introduced a hose pipe ban - which they hadn't then.

The ban has definately been confirmed to be going ahead for atleast 2 weeks now. My neighbour works in mid level management for UU and was called into an urgent meeting on a Sunday evening, 1st July. She told me the ban was going ahead but they were finalising the details in that meeting.

I’m not worrying, worst case scenario for me is I’ll just get an RO which o was considering anyway.

It’ll be a nuisance because like you I can fill up in 40 mins or so which is handy for me when I have a big job on, like this week cleaning a big college, nip home and fill up during my lunch.

I’m away for 3 weeks in August so I’m sure it will be back to normal by the time I return but this was just a heads up anyway.

Out of interest Daz, your TDS shoots up to 350 overnight, what would you do?

I'm in LIverpool and a UU customer, TDS usually around 100. I've had no notice of change of supply, only the hosepipe ban around the 5th August.

Promise you I’m not. I’ll take a pic tomorrow and upload. The letter states that water TDS will be rising and details the difference between hard and soft water etc.

Plenty of peopl I know who are in the same postcode as me have also not received the letter, how localised it’s going to be is anyone’s guess.
