4040 vs 450 gpd ?
« on: July 06, 2018, 09:17:19 am »

Now I have space I am going to set up a static ro system again ( I buy water at mo ). All I have that's salvageable from my old set up is a 4040 housing.
4040 was a necessity in my old place because I needed a quick fill to van tank.
I know there is a vast speed difference in the two but which is more economical to run as I am on a water meter ?
With a new 4040 membrane costing £200  I'm wanting to be sure its worth it. I may also need a booster pump and they cost 3 times what they do for a smaller ro like a 450 gpd. A quick fill although great isn't as necessary now because I'll have a static tank.
I'll probably stick with 4040 but interested in hearing other peeps thoughts/experiences of the two.

Should have added .
tap tds approx . 270 .
Unsure on pressure as yet as need an outside supply and tap fitted.
I use approx 350 - 500 l per day.
My decision will be based on product tds vs waste water vs  running costs inc. the initial investment of the equipment.

I had a Vyair 400 gpd complete with booster pump when I started WFP which served me reasonably well for around 3 years.
Over that time I changed the filters on a regular basis and went through 2-3 membrane changes.
A pair of 200 gpd membranes were around £80+ each time they needed to be renewed.
I use an 11ltr DI vessel after RO and i was having to renew resin 3 times per year at £40 a go.
And even though it was a pumped system it was fairly slow during the cold months of the year.
Around 5 years ago when the membranes were once again due for renewal i decided to ditch the Vyair RO and go for a 4040 system.
My main reason was that i wanted to produce the pure water faster, and being on a water meter i would have more control over the waste/pure ratio.
So today 5 years on since purchasing the 4040 i can honestly say that it was a good purchase and i maintain that once you have a 4040 you will never go back to a smaller RO.
And the 4040 is the better option.

I had a 450gpd , had to leave it running a good 12 hours a day to get around 3/400 Ltrs .
Bought a 4040 from daqua and now it produces around 120ltrs an hour. It wasn’t a cost issue for me , it was convenience 👍

Thanks for replies. I did think the same tbh. My mate I buy water from has a fully automated 450 gpd unit e.g. solenoid cut off thingymagig. Would be a cheaper option but I'm also concerned about getting the lowest product tds I can and minimum waste. I was just wondering if I was over doing things with a 4040 given my usuage but Id probably find a smaller ro more frustrating.

AndyM , has your 4040 membrane lasted 5 years or have you had to replace it ?

Membrane longevity will depend on the composition of your water. Water with more calcium content can't be expected to last as long as membranes filtering water with low calcium content.

The membranes in my 450gpd lasted 6 years, 40 psi no booster pump. Current 4040 membrane is nearly 6 years old. Tested efficiency yesterday - down to 97% which might be due to higher tap water temperatures.

The older I get, the better I was ;)

It is 5 years old now.
I have noticed in the past few weeks the output tds is slowing rising.
From new it was 8-9ppm, and it is currently around 19-20ppm.
The tds from the tap is 280ppm.
If it continues rising much more it will in my opinion become uneconomical on resin and I will replace it.

I use a 450gpd.

It does about 38 litres an hour. It works fine for as I plug in when I get home and it's usually full before I go to bed.

I would like a 4040 at some point though. Really depends if you mind filling for hours.

I would suggest that a decent Booster Pump would be preferred with 45 psi tap pressure.
And if using a Booster Pump you might as well go for a 4040 HF4 membrane as it will be cheaper than the HF5.

phew I was getting worried because I have not change my 40 40 membrane in about 2 years and my resin has not been changed in over a year and a half and its still showing 000 to 001, but my waste is 270 so the water here must be amazing.
