Which way up?
« on: June 30, 2018, 03:14:38 pm »
Just fitting a pump in my van.

It's a sureflo so I fitted it with the writing on the label the right way up but looking on supplies website it should be up the other way up ie the connections at the bottom.

Which is best I am thinking I need to flip it.

Also which way upbdoes the strainer go? Cap up or down?

I dont think it really matters TBH , seen it done both ways .
I always have the pump where it fits , in my stream box it was mounted on its side and now it just lays on the floor  ;D ;D ;D
I'm so lazy I'm getting tired of it !

Wire and connectors at the bottom by some to protect them better from knocks or drips of water.

Shurflo says motor up.  The stainer should be those coned seat ones with wingnuts. Best practice for any filter (fuel) for example was the bowl underneath. This would save the majority of the contents from spilling over the place when unscrewing it. Especially if it was a petrol filter.

This is the one we use

Our first trailer system had the pump fitted motor side down. They fitted this filter which tightened up correctly with the motor mounted that way.

Thanks for that. Good idea with the bowl. I put the motor up thinking the connectors are lower so less work if water level low in my tank.

Thanks for your input for those that posted.

By the way it seems funny that most window cleaning suppliers sell products with no instructions. Just bought two pumps and they arrived just packed in bubble wrap with no paperwork. Good  job the info is available on here.

Shurflo had this suggested pump fitting orientation advise out years ago. But if you fit it that way the info label is upside down.

As Nathankaye says, it doesn't really matter tbh. Brodex fitted their pumps with the motors down and horizontal on other tanks.  The idea behind the motor up instruction was that if any water leaked from the pump then it would leak downwards and leave the motor dry. In 14 years using Shurflo pumps we have never had a leak from the pump head.

The first system we purchased had the pump fitted inside a water proof electrical enclosure/pump box. The plastic outlet pipe was faulty and a pin hole leak developed which slowly filled the box with water. The motor was fully submerged in water before we realised the issue. The motor was still working. I became aware of the problem when water started dripping from the hose outlet 3/4 of the way up the side of the enclosure. I ordered a new pump. I stripped the motor from that original pump to let it completely dry out, regreased the needle bearings, reassembled it a couple of months later and we used that pump for years. Sold it along with a trolley I had put up for sale.

That taught me that pure water doesn't conduct 12v electricity.
