Spruce - hf5 4040 RO
« on: June 17, 2018, 02:42:42 pm »
It s not just directed to Spruce , all opinions are welcome.  I have outside tap pressure of 60psi with an average TDS of 275. I am looking to get a 4040 RO, with this pressure Im thinking HF5 without a booster pump. I've been looking at a Pure Freedom 2400GPD HF5 but their always out of stock and I am desperate to start producing my own pure, didn't want to get a smaller system and have it running for hours or need to uprate it later. Could Spruce or anyone recommend any other suppliers that I could try.  Cheers for any comments

Yes, HF5 membrane is better suited to your water pressure than an HF4.
I would also go for an Axeon membrane.

It will probably be an out of stock item with most suppliers but they will be able to make it up to your specifications pretty quickly.
Do you want pressure gauges?
Do you want 20" prefilters? (I prefer 20" as the Fiberdyne carbon block prefilter lasts twice as long as the 10" Fiberdyne does.)
Do you want the supplier to fit the membrane for you? I think Doug at Daqua offers this service. If so then you need to run the r/o very quickly after you receive it.

Daqua, GAPS water are a couple that will supply.

I wouldn't use Collins water as they supply a cheap Chinese manufactured membrane. I would also hestitate to use VYair for the same reason. (Vyair do sell an Axeon membranes so I guess you could insist they fit that one if that's what you decide to do.)

One of the other options is the type of r/o housing. There is the Champ housing and there is also a stainless steel housing. Gardiners also supply components and have an FRP housing on sale ATM. You could order all the parts from Gardiners and assemble it yourself.
Alex has a video on how to do it.

Thanks Shrek I'll have  look at Daqua.
After reading a few posts the 20" prefilters is the way to go, with the fiberdyne carbon block. I wasn't thinking of using pressure gauges.
I have looked at Gardiners, as they been mentioned in past posts, but it looks like they only supply smaller systems! I didn't want to get one that has to be running for hours.
  Thanks for your help

I bought a 4040 kit with a 10" Fibredyne filter and Hf4 Axeon membrane around 5 years ago from Gaps:
http://gapswater.co.uk/acatalog/Reverse-osmosis-kits-for-window-cleaning2-1-2-1-1-1-1-1.html

I didn't feel the need to upgrade to a 20" filter and the 10" has been adequate for my requirements.

I bought the twin 20 inch spectrum prefilter set from gardiner that has gauges in it then fitted a fibredyne and a sediment for good measure.
I bought a axeon hf5 membrane from wcw when they had the Black Friday deal on and its been great with 60 psi tap pressure like yours but my tap TDS is 76ppm, it takes it down to 2-3 ppm producing about 120 litres an hour roughly!

Thanks for your replies , looked at several options, then decided on a pure freedom setup. 2400 Gpd, so the water wont be running for ages. Could of gone for a smaller system . Talked to Andy at Pure Freedom, I said my water pressure, 60psi, he said that's slightly better pressure than they have got there and their using a 4040 Hf4 and that I wouldn't need a booster pump. It will take  a couple of hours to produce 350 litres. The system is on their website and has 2 20 inch filters. Any thoughts anybody as I'm going to order it tomorrow.
      Thanks

IMHO if an HF5 membrane at 50psi is producing 120lph of pure, I find it difficult to comprehend an HF4 membrane will produce 350 liters in a couple of hours at 60psi.

Axeon don't provide a water pressure against rejection rate graph, but both membranes perform identically at different water pressures. So the HF5 needs 80psi and the HF4 needs 100psi w/p to perform the same.

https://www.axeonwater.com/Membrane-Elements.html

I was told by PF when I was considering a 4040 that the HF4 would produce the same amount of water as the HF5 would at 40psi. My gut told me that if that was the case, why have we got HF5's on the market?

Thanks for the reply, I'd already decided that I'll need a booster pump before reading your post. The Clarke CBM240 is discontinued, Ive looked at the  CBM240E, The old one look better but I probably go with this one

Its always been the cbm240e that was recommended as a booster pump for us.
But I think this pump is more suited to a static system rather than a van mount.

Purefreedom do a nice one that links nicely in as a van mount, but I don't know if its got the facility to cut the pump when the van tank is full. Purefreedom do an ordinary solenoid valve and float switch that will cut the water supply to your r/o when your tank is full.

Here's an example of their system offering
